The Partnership is a non-profit, in-district partner to LA Unified, not a charter network. As an independent nonprofit organization, the Partnership serves 13,200 students across 20 LA Unified schools in Watts, Boyle Heights and South Los Angeles. The Partnership works within the LA Unified School District context, which includes honoring all collective bargaining agreements for its teachers and school staff.

About this job

The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools is seeking a Manager of New Teacher Supports. The Manager’s primary responsibilities will be to source and cultivate candidates for our Teacher Residency program, which is a year-long teacher credentialing program in partnership with the Alder Graduate School of Education. In addition, the Manager will support the administration of the entire Teacher Residency and the creative development of broader pipelines of candidates in our Residency. The Manager will report to the Director of Teacher Residency, and will be a part of the School Talent Team as well as the Partnership’s broader School Transformation Team.

Roles & responsibilities

The Manager’s key responsibilities include the following:

Teacher Residency Recruitment (30%)

  • Lead the process to recruit candidates for the Teacher Residency, including working directly with a recruiter from Alder Graduate School and the Director of Teacher Residency to:
  • Develop an understanding of who the ideal candidate profiles might be for the Residency
  • Determine where our program should be advertised and where updates should be shared
  • Design a marketing campaign that will appeal to potential applicants and utilize various social media and other venues for advertising
  • Cultivate applicants and accepted candidates by actively pursuing conversations with individual potential candidates and with connectors who have potential candidates in their network, and also keep candidates warm who have already been accepted into the program; this is a role that will require putting yourself “out there” to cultivate more applicants and build relationships with the accepted candidates
  • Prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion in the recruitment of candidates for the Residency, as we work toward the goal of bringing in a cohort of Residents who reflect the racial and socioeconomic backgrounds of our students and who may have grown up in the communities we serve (Watts, South LA, and Boyle Heights)
  • Focus on recruitment targets and apply excellent attention to detail to track progress to goals and assess which recruitment methods are proving worthwhile/most impactful
  • Help manage logistics for Resident screenings and interview days

Program Administration (20%)

  • Support Director of Teacher Residency with management of materials, logistics, Zoom links, and tracking of various details for the Residency program, which includes weekly day-long seminars for Residents, monthly day-long seminars for Mentors, two one-day retreats, and other happenings
  • Manage the payment of stipends to Residents and Mentors on a predetermined schedule
  • Partner with colleagues on the School Talent Team to ensure all Residents complete everything needed to earn a teaching credential from the state of California the summer after their Residency year

Recruitment Cultivation & Outreach (20%)

  • Collaborate with Director of Teacher Residency, colleagues on the School Talent Team, and others to design opportunities for Partnership high schools students to learn about the teaching profession and become excited about a pathway into teaching
  • Identify opportunities in our schools for local university students, especially Partnership high school alumni, to get paid to work in our schools (such as in teaching assistant roles or through AmeriCorps stipend-funded programs)
  • Develop more creative pathways to broaden the pipelines of candidates into our Residency program or into other teacher credentialing programs that serve our schools

New Educator Support Team (20%)

  • Support new teacher orientation and sig series; help project manage events and learning sessions
  • Maintain close communication with new teachers after they start teaching in order to support and troubleshoot any problems
  • Manage communication with principals around their cohort of new teachers every year
  • Work with Director of Teacher Residency to define minimum supports schools must provide to new teachers (we have draft of this from prior years)
  • Collaborate across Talent and Educator Engagement around data collection and information management for targets such as retention over the course of several years, survey data, academic impact data if we have it, etc.

School Talent Team Responsibilities (10%)

  • Meet weekly with supervisor (Director of Teacher Residency)
  • Attend biweekly School Talent Team meetings, biweekly Level Team meetings for either Elementary or Secondary, and monthly School Transformation meetings
  • Support cross-functional projects and events as they arise

  • 2-3 years professional experience with increasing responsibility and independence, and achieving exceptional results
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Exposure to public schools, school systems, or education support organizations preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university

  • Consistent access to a vehicle to use for work, including travel to and between school sites and the office, and transporting supplies for events.
