The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California (ACLU SoCal) seeks a Board Liaison to join the team.

Founded in 1923, the ACLU SoCal has been at the forefront of many major efforts to protect civil liberties, civil rights, and equal justice in California. Principled and nonpartisan, ACLU SoCal has offices in Los Angeles, Orange County (Orange), the Inland Empire (San Bernardino), and Kern County (Bakersfield). ACLU SoCal tackles a vast array of issues, including criminal justice, police practices, First Amendment rights, gender equity and reproductive justice, LGBTQ rights, immigrants’ rights, education equity, and economic justice.

The primary purpose of the Board Liaison is to provide essential governance and administrative support to our two Boards of Directors – the ACLU of Southern California (“Union”) and the ACLU Foundation of Southern California (“Foundation”) – as well as the President of the Union Board and the Chair of the Foundation Board. The Board Liaison reports to the Executive Director.

Roles & responsibilities


Full-time, Exempt


Governance Support

• Provides high-level support to advance the governance functions of the Boards.

• Coordinates and actively participates in the orientation of new Board members, officers, and committee chairs. Coordinates Board member offboarding.

• Works with Union President or Foundation Chair and Executive Director to draft Board and Executive Meeting agendas that strategically drive Board focus and productivity.

• Ensures the timely distribution of materials for Board and Executive Committee meetings.

• Takes minutes at Board and Executive Committee meetings, drafts minutes for review, and disseminates the final minutes, tracking decisions made and actions taken.

• Organizes, maintains, tracks, and safeguards all files related to the Boards and the organization’s governance, including, but not limited to, Board and Executive Committee meeting minutes, resolutions, agenda, historical board information, and approved policies, in accordance with bylaws, procedures and record retention policies. Ensures these materials are available internally and externally as appropriate.

• Conducts research and analyzes documents and prepares recommendations related to Board policies or procedures as required or requested.

• Works with Union President and Foundation Chair and Executive Director to review and maintain by-laws and other governance documents; and supports them in the on-going review of Board committee roles, responsibilities, and structure to ensure clarity, accountability, and effectiveness.

• Manages the annual conflict of interest disclosure and whistleblower policy processes, including distributing policies and forms and tracking responses.

Administrative Support

• Provides high-level administrative support to the Boards and Board leaders.

• Manages Board and Executive Committee calendars.

• Schedules telephone/video conference calls and meetings of Board and Executive Committees.

• Provides day-of meeting support to ensure successful execution of Board and Executive Committee meetings, managing room, equipment, and refreshment set up and take down.

• Plans and manages events and logistics for Board-related events, including the venue, meals, supplies, etc.

• Coordinates internal and external presentations and speakers for Board-related events.

• Analyzes and tracks information and follow-up items; generates applicable reports and documents.

• Helps maintain up to date contact information for all Board members.

• Works with appropriate Board committees to develop, implement, and coordinate a Board engagement strategy.

• Uses best practices for tracking acknowledgment and reporting progress on Board engagement, including tracking individualized participation and records for each Board member (including onboarding, committee placement, volunteer opportunities, recognition, etc.).

• Advises lay leadership and staff on Board policy, policy legislative history, and archival support, and regarding previous and current activities surrounding the Boards.

• Reviews and revises orientation on an annual basis or as needed.

Executive Administration

• Coordinates with the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director, building a strong team in the executive office.

• Works closely with Executive Director and Senior Leadership Team on Board communication.

• Manages the correspondence between the ED and the Boards.

• Serves as primary point of contact for all Board members.

• Manages Boards’ annual budgets.

• Maintains discretion and confidentiality.



• Understanding of and passion for the ACLU of SoCal’s mission.

• At least three years of senior leadership/administrative support experience in a professional environment, preferably in a nonprofit environment.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat ability to produce detailed, accurate, and professional-looking documents.

• Impeccable organization skills with intense attention to detail.

• Excellent oral and written skills.

• Experience and interest in internal and external communications, partnership development, and fundraising

• Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines on concurrent projects in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.

• Ability to develop effective organizational systems and understand the necessary practices and policies to help maintain a high-performing board of directors.

• Ability to work creatively and independently with a professional work style and superior problem-solving skills.

• Forward-looking thinker who actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions.

• Ability to communicate and work effectively with leadership, interns, staff, and board members.

The salary range for this position $67,000.00- $77,000.00. Benefits include medical, vision, and dental insurance for staff members and their eligible dependents; life and long- term disability insurance; 401(k) plan with employer match; ample vacation and sick leave and fifteen paid holidays.
