Expanding the Saint Anne's model to provide free music education
SOL-LA Music Academy has built a long-standing partnership with Saint Anne School, a Title 1 school in Santa Monica, to integrate music as a core subject. We offer all students TK-8th grade a tuition-free music program, including instruments, both in and after school. Our classes include music appreciation, instrumental classes, choir, and after school orchestra. The program has become an integral part of the curriculum and life at Saint Anne School. We seek to replicate and expand this model in schools that serve disadvantaged households.

What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
The benefits of having a child learn and perform music have been well-documented for many decades. However, obtaining a quality music education is prohibitively expensive for many families. At schools, music is often not considered a core subject simply because of the costs associated with building a program. In particular, schools that serve students from economically disadvantaged households from underrepresented communities often do not offer quality music education programs and instruments which results in inequality and lack of opportunities.
SOL-LA Music Academy is committed to attracting, engaging and serving children for whom quality music education would not otherwise be available. We believe that creating a diverse, inclusive musical community benefits everyone involved.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
SOL-LA has built a long-standing partnership with Saint Anne School in Santa Monica to integrate music as a core subject for all students. Saint Anne is the only non-public Title 1 school in Santa Monica, with at least 40% of students coming from economically disadvantaged households.
SOL-LA offers a tuition-free music program and instruments to all students grade TK- 8 at Saint Anne School. Our classes include music appreciation, instrumental classes, choir, and after school orchestra practice. The program has become an integral part of the curriculum and life at the school.
We seek to replicate the success of this program by identifying and engaging with other Title I schools in the community to create a robust musical program that offers quality music education and instruments to all students free of charge.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
SOL-LA is committed to making music education accessible to anyone, regardless of their economic circumstances, cultural background, or disability.
By replicating the Saint Anne's model at other schools, we are leveling the playing field and creating a inclusivity and accessibility of music education. We recognise the power and value of differences, and through this program we would welcome and embrace a culturally diverse community by fostering a sense of community through social interactions, friendships, and a supportive learning environment.
Students and families would be part of a vibrant musical community, learn an instrument from K-12th, and learn valuable skills that are the foundation for a sustainable, fulfilling life, whether or not a student chooses music professionally. The community by extension would benefit and we would create opportunities to enjoy music and come together as a community.
