Applying a proven solution to a new issue or sector (using an existing model, tool, resource, strategy, etc. for a new purpose)
What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
The devastating wildfires across Los Angeles profoundly impacted thousands of California families, displacing entire communities and reshaping neighborhoods. Nearly ten thousand Altadena, Malibu and Pacific Palisades homeowners lost their primary residences and lack the resources to rebuild, facing potential displacement from their properties.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
A key part of our Expanding Housing Choices initiative effort is partnering with CA-based Samara to allocate high-quality, factory-built homes for fire survivors in LA who are unable to relocate and whose insurance will not cover the cost of constructing a new home on their property, enabling them to remain in the communities where they have spent their lives. Samara will build these homes for no profit and there will be no costs for those who receive a home.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
Steadfast LA has worked closely with city and state officials to expedite permitting and regulatory processes to ensure victims can have these units installed without unnecessary delays. Leveraging the power of private sector innovation and in collaboration with Steadfast LA, Governor Gavin Newsom has already announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence-driven software to aid Los Angeles City, specifically the Pacific Palisades, LA County, namely Altadena, as well as the cities of Malibu and Pasadena in accelerating the approval process for rebuilding permits to help communities recover more quickly from the Eaton and Palisades fires.
Approximately how many people will be impacted by this project, program, or initiative?
