YWCA Glendale and Pasadena is seeking a dynamic and mission-driven Chief Operating Officer (COO) who brings nonprofit experience, self-awareness, and strong interpersonal skills to effectively lead a talented and racially diverse organization toward the goal of women’s equality and racial justice.

Reporting to the CEO, the COO will provide leadership in creating and maintaining an organization culture consistent with the values, vision and mission of YWCA Glendale and Pasadena, in order to attract and retain qualified staff. The COO will provide day to day management, direction and support to ensure that the operations, human resources, finance and facilities functions all run efficiently and effectively. Managing the finance, facilities, and HR team, the COO will need to be a problem solver, working strategically in a high performing environment to adapt to the evolving needs of the organization. Using their experience in change management, the COO will work closely with the CEO as a strategic thought partner to help guide the organization through continued growth and sustainability.

Roles & responsibilities


Organizational Leadership

In partnership with the CEO, provides executive-level leadership to the Human Resources, Finance, Facilities and Program teams.

Defines senior team performance metrics and evaluation criteria in accordance with the defined statement of work and strategic plan.

Identifies and addresses weaknesses, strengths, and growth opportunities for the organization. Assesses and improves administrative operations where needed.

Works with leadership and staff to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Participates in staff designated board committees and ad hoc workgroups.

Oversee the leadership dashboard’s metrics and milestones and prepares reports for board meetings.

Partners with CEO and Board of Directors in executing the development of long-range strategic plans for all areas of responsibility and an overall corporate strategic plan.

Human Resources

Hires new employees and oversees onboarding and orientation in a welcoming and seamless manner.

Provides oversight and leads the day to day administration of Human Resources.

Develops and implement all staff training programs, policies and procedures including new hire orientation, the creation of professional development plans and internal trainings.

Works with HR team to set employee performance expectations and provides feedback and evaluation of outcomes for areas of responsibility in a regular systematic manner, including disciplining, documenting actions taken and discharging as necessary.

Motivates, leads, and inspires team to quickly resolve challenges. Engages staff in team building and fosters a culture of collaboration.

Coaches and provides training to designated managers to strengthen accountability and leadership skills.

Provides leadership and direction in revising and maintaining Handbooks and HR Manuals to ensure legal compliance.

Conducts a comprehensive benefits and compensation program review.

Ensures the organization’s compliance with all human resources policies, procedures and practices.

Serves as liaison to the HR attorneys and consultants.

Finance & Gov’t Grant Compliance

Works with the Finance Director and provides guidance to the finance and administrative compliance process for contracts and grants, newly funded programs, audit preparation, and required reporting to public and private funders.

Partners with Finance Director to develop and prepare short- term and long-range plans and budgets and recommend strategies and plans to ensure financial viability of the organization

Ensures policies and internal controls are in place and the organization is meeting financial compliance requirements. Proactively ensures compliance with all regulatory bodies (including grant makers) to provide accurate and timely statutory filings and legal financial practices, policies, and reporting.

Operations & Facilities

Serves as an organization-wide leader on property, information technology systems and services; risk management; security management; energy management; insurance, property management, facility rentals and improvements.

Builds and cultivates relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders, including insurance brokers, external vendors, and others to support, sustain and build capacity.

Reads, interprets, reviews, and complies with all federal and state legislation pertaining to operations in areas of responsibility.

Develops and implements quality metrics, internal controls, policies, and procedures for services in all areas of responsibility.

Oversees Facilities Manager to plan and implement facility management activities including on-going physical and capital improvements, and the development and monitoring of all safety and emergency procedures.

Works with Facilities manager to develop and monitor physical plant and capital budgets.

Oversee the organization’s safety and security function and front desk operation.

Reports operations results monthly, quarterly, and annually to support improvements where necessary.

Updates management and leadership on any emerging issues and risks.



A minimum of 7-10 years of experience managing and supervising teams.

Knowledge and experience in nonprofit management, operations, and leadership.

Strong experience in human resources and facility management.

Experience developing a culture of continuous quality improvement throughout all levels of the organization.

In-depth understanding of nonprofit grants, contracts, and financial management.

Provide guidance around professional and leadership development.

Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Mastery of Microsoft suite, Outlook, database software, and other virtual platforms.
