About this organization

For 30 years, we have supported artists who work in communities instead of galleries. We incubate artist projects at our temporary headquarters and off-site in collaboration with local businesses and government agencies. We host both established and emerging artists with the goal of cross pollination, mentorship, and community building. All artist projects are woven into the free programming that we offer to the community. These projects create a ripple effect and sometimes evolve into programs. We provide support services to artists and neighbors with programs including Skill Share Workshops, and online resources.

The community of artists that is Side Street Projects is also greater than Side Street Projects. We hold a great deal of history in LA County as a community art project space and serve as a connective tissue supporting the larger network of artists and organizations doing social justice work on the ground.

About this job

Side Street Projects (SSP) is requesting proposals for our upcoming 2022-23 Artist Residencies program titled Symbionts: Organisms living in symbiosis. SSP will offer residencies for (2) artists or collectives to develop a community-engaged art project with the clear intention of interdependent multigenerational engagement and sanctuary in the community of Pasadena. The residency will take place between November 2022 and June 2023 based on the availability of applicants.

About the theme: Symbionts: Organisms living in symbiosis

(Symbiosis: Long-term mutually beneficial interaction between organisms where "long-term" is defined in generations.)

Artists will develop projects with the clear intention of interdependent multigenerational engagement and sanctuary in the community of Pasadena.

These goals have been brought to us by our neighbors in NW Pasadena who have asked us to create peaceful spaces in our community through hands-on artmaking and healing opportunities.

SSP will offer an honoraria of $2,250 per artist or collective and a materials budget of approximately $500. We will also offer professional development by access to space, tools, and staff support through the facilitation, marketing, and execution of the projects. Each artist will be given a staff time budget, based on the individual needs of their residency.

We work through the lens of DIY(do-it-yourself)/DIT(do-it-together) values, including using resources respectfully with a (re)generative and symbiotic relationship to the environment and the communities they come from.

Deadline to apply is Sunday, October 23rd, 2022, at 11:59 pm PST.

For more information on the theme, eligibility, and the application process, please visit our Open Call Homepage.

An Artist Residency Informational Meeting will be held on Saturday, September 10th from 10:00-11:00 am PST and Tuesday, September 13th from 6:15 pm-7:15 pm PST via Zoom. Register in advance to secure your spot! We intend to support folks with their application process and answer any questions they may have through these info meetings. This is also an opportunity to get acquainted with SSP. If you are unable to attend either of the Artist Residency Informational Meetings we will post a recording of the sessions on our Open Call homepage.

This project is funded through the generous support of the Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission and the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division.
