About this job

The Senior Marketing & Communications Director leads movement growth, brand strategy, and communications for RepresentUs. You will ensure that our messaging is on brand and supports our organizational objectives:

1) Win the hearts and minds of the American people to build a movement;

2) Win state and local victories and

3) Put country over party.

You are here to build a movement, tell the story of the movement and RepresentUs’s role in that story.

As a member of the executive team, you will define an overall vision to strengthen and grow the RepresentUs brand to showcase a real-world movement, informing our members, inspiring them to action, and turning them into evangelists for the movement.

You will establish clear goals for marketing & communications and articulate strategies for achieving those goals.

This position will be fully remote working East Coast hours, and open to residents in the United States, with occasional travel required.

This is an exempt position. The starting salary range for the Senior Director of Marketing & Communications position is $135,000-175,000.

Starting salary is based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. To counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, we use a nonnegotiable starting salary system, while benchmarking our pay to competitive markets.

Roles & responsibilities

  • Grow the Movement: As the lead storyteller for RepresentUs, you will lead and execute the vision to recruit millions of people to our movement, inspiring them to action and building a brand for America to believe in. 
  • Develop Multimedia and Creative: You will lead the evolution and growth of RepresentUs’s award-winning creative media campaigns.
  • Build Marketing Strategy for Political Campaigns: You will serve as the primary director of collaboration between the Political and Marketing Departments, working with the Political Director to define and maintain departmental and cross-departmental structure, communication, and accountability systems. You'll ensure the Marketing Department is supporting state and local campaigns to employ best-in-class practices for all marketing, communications, persuasion, activation and GOTV, and telling the story of those campaigns to the American public.
  • Be the Organization's Subject Matter Expert for Internal and External Communications: Lead the development and deployment of communication plans and talking points for rapid response events and crisis communications, ensuring accuracy and consistency. Assist with internal communications as necessary. Ensure that RepresentUs' voice is being maintained through press and digital channels.
  • Oversee a talented team of professional staff and contractors in the areas of social media, content, media relations, website, graphic design, ensuring that they have clear goals, communication, and resources to meet their ambitious goals. Facilitate top-level team meetings and department-wide events.
  • Lead Strategy Development and Execution: Collaborate on strategic plans and content reviews for marketing campaigns, ensuring they advance political objectives for the organization. Take input from team members on challenges, improvements, opportunities, etc., and decide how to operationalize big picture changes to our team's strategy and processes. Continually review changes to the market, consumer trends and the activities of competitors, adjusting the marketing plan if necessary. Assess gaps between goals and our resources (staff, technology, vendors), and propose solutions to close them.
  • Provide Program & Project Oversight: Define success and priority level for major program areas. Lead strategic planning meetings and work with staff to develop milestones or "slices" of projects to determine whether department priorities are on track. Provide feedback and guidance on the department's project plans to ensure they are optimized for hitting goals and using staff resources/budget wisely. Provide guidance and feedback to project owners to ensure projects stay on-track and help overcome obstacles Work with team leads to monitor, maintain, and submit budgets.
  • Build and Manage Departmental Budgets: You'll work with leaders in your team and colleagues on the Executive Team to build and manage an annual budget for your department.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.


  • 8+ years of marketing and communications experience. Must have experience leading communications and brand strategy, preferably for a political organization. Advertising and creative experience are a plus.
  • Expert staff management skills: Able to coach team leads on staff management and team-building, manage staff and set professional development goals for mid-level managers.
  • Demonstrated experience translating political objectives into organizing and communications plans.
  • Marketing, design and creative best practices: Know what's excellent vs. not in line with best practices for a variety of channels.
  • Proven ability to use data to inform decision making and marketing strategies.
  • Proven ability to develop systems and processes that streamline teamwork, encourage collaboration and hold staff accountable.
  • Excellent strategic thinking and execution skills; ability to manage multiple projects within a complex and sophisticated landscape.
  • Commitment to working beyond partisanship is required. Previous experience working with cross-partisan coalitions is preferred – candidates without this experience will be considered if they can speak to how they would approach working across the aisle.
  • Strong budget management skills.
