Job description:

JOB TITLE: Academic Tutor

PROGRAM: Beyond the Bell-Wilson

STATUS: Part-Time

REPORTS TO: Expanded Learning Director

SUMMARY:

Legacy LA-Beyond the Bell is seeking an experienced Academic Tutor for its summer and after-school program at Wilson High School. This position will provide group and one-on-one academic in-person assistance to high school students in the Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles area. Tutors work directly under the supervision of the Site Coordinator/ Expanded Learning Director.

SALARY: Hourly Rate: $18

PROJECTED SCHEDULE: Mon, Wed, Thurs: 3:30pm-6:30pm & Tues 2:30pm-5:30pm

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

● Plan and facilitate enrichment and educational activities with groups of 5-15 students

● Assist students with homework in all subjects, academic enrichment, recreation, and the arts

● Supervise all participants to ensure a safe learning environment and organized program

● Maintain accurate daily attendance records and ensure that students sign in and out each day

● Attend weekly and/or bi-weekly staff meetings and trainings

● Plan for academic enrichment activities, workshops and events

● Prepare educational lesson plans

● Attend required staff meetings, trainings and events on and off-site

● Perform other duties as assigned (attend community events on and off-site, assist in running other programming/ events, etc.)

● Conduct outreach such as flyering in the community and/or at schools to recruit new youth

QUALIFICATIONS:

● High school diploma, General Education Diploma (GED) or equivalent education required

● Must be graduate of, or currently enrolled in college

● Minimum one-year experience in tutoring/mentoring environment, preferably with high school students

● Must have effective communication skills

● Proven ability to assist students with academic assignments

● Ability to work independently and within a team environment as needed

● Must have access to reliable transportation to arrive to work site at scheduled time consistently.

● Ability to plan and implement lesson plans on a weekly basis

●Bilingual (English/ Spanish) is a plus

● Some evenings and/or weekends may be required

● Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) prior to beginning employment

● Must present proof of negative Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) dated within 60 days of start date

● Must complete CPR/First Aid Certification within 90 days of employment
