Position Overview

Inclusive Action is seeking a Community Innovation Advisor to lead our innovation initiatives - fast-paced, multi stakeholder, emergent programs - that focus on building both economic and community power with workers, micro entrepreneurs, small business owners and community-based partners. The Advisor will guide a new “community innovation” division which integrates our policy and access-to-capital priorities, with a focus on community-oriented real estate and community impact investing.

Underinvested communities in Los Angeles and other cities are facing significant challenges, including escalating housing costs, gentrification and displacement, and accelerating economic deprivations. The team at Inclusive Action is looking for a leader who will co-design and manage experimental initiatives that build economic power with underinvested communities, including the development of real estate investment funds, land banks, and alternative finance tools. The Advisor will also be responsible for effectively engaging and activating community members to contribute to the growing movement of community organizations and residents who are looking to create an economically just Los Angeles, including through a community advisory board, cohort learning models and small business cooperation.

This Advisor has the expertise, focus and influence to execute on integrated, complex initiatives that require a high level of coordination across internal staff and external stakeholders, drive strategies that will support IAC’s mission, and represent the organization publicly. While strong project management and communication skills are a necessity in this role, the successful candidate will also be a proven problem solver who can find clarity in complex and gray situations to create deep impact.

The Community Innovation Advisor is passionate about Los Angeles, infinitely curious, self-directed, and interested in producing and coordinating excellent power-building efforts in service of the communities Inclusive Action is dedicated to. They recognize the urgency of economic justice work and are interested in disrupting the “status quo” approaches to revitalizing neighborhoods. This position will report directly to the Executive Director and will collaborate closely with the entire Leadership Team (Executive Director, Deputy Director, Lending Director, Operations and Finance Director, Policy Director).

Roles & responsibilities

This team member will be responsible for:

Leadership

Oversee special projects that align with Inclusive Action’s mission and complement the existing initiatives of the organization.

Design and lead the quality assurance processes of new initiatives, including implementing consistent evaluation systems and feedback mechanisms.

Advise the Executive Director and Deputy Director on opportunities in the field.

Represent the organization’s innovative initiatives in external settings with partners, elected officials, and other stakeholders.

Partnerships, Strategy & Learning

Collaborate with project partners to identify the objectives, scope, budget, and timeline for projects.

Facilitate robust discussions that set clear goals,and address obstacles.

Create and manage detailed project plans as needed to ensure project success.

Create and implement a cycle of focused, productive meetings to drive programs from kick-off to completion.

Manage complex budgets that may include local, state and federal funds as well as subcontractors.

Ensure that all assigned projects are completed on time, within scope and budget, and that project goals are achieved.

Implement continuous improvement for projects based on feedback loops and recommendations.

Work with the Leadership Team to design community-centered processes to be implemented by the Community Engagement Associate.

Stakeholder Management

Identify all key stakeholders, including and centering the needs of community members, of the strategic project and create an engagement and/or change management plan that engages stakeholders at the right level and right time, including: developing agendas and facilitating cross-functional work group/project team meetings, engaging leaders in the organization and key partners, and drafting communications to high-level stakeholders.

Build buy-in and gather feedback on programs when appropriate.

Build relationships across Los Angeles County to ensure project success, including through networking and representing Inclusive Action with respective stakeholder groups.

Support Executive Director & Deputy Director in Leadership Team collaboration and development.

Management

Manage associates who are supporting the development of special projects, including guiding their project management, and professional growth and well-being. Management of associates includes helping them to develop work plans, project plans, and learning and evaluation systems.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

Minimum 10 years of relevant experience (i.e. real estate, finance, community organizing or development or policy etc);

Minimum 3 years experience managing a team of full-time staff;

Strong verbal and written communication skills;

Strong program and time management skills;

Ability to go between macro and micro thinking and action;

Ability to work in highly collaborative settings;

High emotional intelligence and ability to communicate clearly and thoughtfully with impacted residents, team members, and organizational partners;

Ability to center the needs of impacted residents in all capacities as advocate and collaborator;

Ability to see the big picture while breaking down concepts into more tangible and actionable steps;

Preference for Spanish and English verbal and written fluency;

Positive, upbeat attitude that supports Inclusive Action staff and its organizational partners;

Commitment to Inclusive Action’s mission and interest in urban planning and economic development.

Compensation

Inclusive Action for the City offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The salary range for this position is $100,000-115,000 depending on experience. The position also offers full medical, dental, and vision benefits, a 401k retirement plan with 3% matching after one year of work, 18 paid holidays, and up to two weeks of paid vacation a year with an opportunity to accrue more after serving two years with the organization

Impact of COVID-19 on Inclusive Action

Currently the Inclusive Action team is working in person at the office 40% of the time and remotely 60% of the time until further notice and all employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19. The physical office is located in Boyle Heights and is available for necessary in-person appointments as well as optional work space. All applicants are expected to live in Los Angeles County.
