The Director will lead and manage a small team of development professionals with a focus primarily on major gifts work. The Director will have personal responsibility for managing a portfolio of high-net-worth donors and prospects. In addition, they will work to cultivate and steward a pipeline of donors, of all types and at all levels, and advance Facing History’s visibility and profile in the region.

Roles & responsibilities

Fundraising strategy and execution

Lead all regional development efforts

Work closely with the Executive Director to generate and execute regional fundraising goals to fulfill the organization-wide strategic plan

Serve as primary manager for a portfolio of current and potential individual major donors and support the Executive Director with management of her portfolio

Grow and manage a local and regional institutional donor and family foundation portfolio.

Participate as part of a local and national/international team to carry out Facing History’s fundraising strategy and achieve revenue goals for the region.

Engage targeted constituencies through additional programs and activities that deepen donor engagement and revenue growth, including new private individual and corporate events.

Oversee and grow leadership and revenue for annual benefit dinner (~May 2023)

Internal Management and Partnerships.

Work with the regional Advisory Board, in close partnership with the Executive Director and SoCal Development team, communicating Facing History’s financial model, building board development strategies, providing stewardship and support to Board members, identifying and cultivating new members, and overseeing sub-committee activities

Manage all aspects of the Southern California development team.

Serve as a collaborative colleague holding up the values of Facing History throughout their work.

Support the culture of a learning organization by encouraging feedback, exploring new ideas, and continuously challenging oneself to grow along with Facing History’s mission.

Qualifications

BA/BS or equivalent

A confident leader with at least eight years of nonprofit development experience or relationship management experience. Demonstrated success in major gifts work, including closing high-level gifts and knowledge of moves-management fundraising required.

An engaging relationship-builder with excellent interpersonal skills and strong oral and written communication skills; experience building relationships with Board members preferred.

Familiar with the Southern California regional philanthropic and educational communities.

Creative and flexible self-starter able to work both individually and as a member of consensus-seeking teams.

Organized and effective project manager, with the ability to manage multiple needs and assignments in a fast-paced nonprofit setting.

An experienced staff leader and manager who can inspire and manage a team with humility toward a common goal.

Genuinely committed to the mission of Facing History and Ourselves and able to articulate the importance of the organization’s work to a variety of audiences.

A life-long learner, ready to ask questions and seek guidance when necessary.

Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google office suite; experience with Salesforce or other fundraising databases required.

BA/BS or equivalent

Relevant work-study, internship, or professional experience, ideally involving project coordination in a nonprofit context

Understands and embraces the critical role administrative coordination and support plays in the success of the department and the organization as a whole

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and tasks

Proactive self-starter; strong attention to detail; experience working in a busy hybrid work environment a plus

Solutions focused individual who is comfortable asking questions, searching for answers, and gaining clarity when needed

Strong problem-solving skills

Experience and comfort level working with multiple leadership styles; ability to “manage up” when needed

Interest in and ability to articulate the mission of Facing History and Ourselves

Excellent communication, listening, and organizational skills; sense of humor is a plus

Excellent computer skills, including experience with the Google suite; experience with Salesforce or CRM databases a plus

Excellent judgment and ability to anticipate and quickly prioritize; demonstrated experience taking initiative and being proactive; confident and unflappable.

Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
