Communications Consultant

Established in 2021, the Environmental Justice Communities Against Plastics coalition (EJCAP) addresses the life cycle of plastic pollution, prioritizing the needs of frontline communities. We support the development of local, environmentally responsible, zero-waste alternatives led by communities and workers.

EJCAP works to ensure that environmental justice communities are leading just transition strategies and pathways to resolve the plastic pollution crisis. As a coalition representing communities that are the most disproportionately affected by the lifecycle of plastic,

EJCAP is uniquely positioned to effect meaningful and sustainable change.

Narrative and Messaging Strategy

Build and implement messaging strategies and tools that effectively communicate EJCAP’s mission, values, and impact.

Raise awareness and educate people about the lifecycle of plastics and the associated public health harms.

Craft storytelling and messaging that resonates with community members, media, legislators, and impacted communities.

Work with the EJCAP communications committee to develop key messages that effectively communicate our priorities and community voices.

Use data-informed approaches to ensure messaging aligns with current community needs and environmental justice priorities.

Collect and amplify stories from EJCAP coalition and community members, and develop a strategic plan to share these narratives in ways that build public awareness and influence policy change.

Embed a long-term vision for environmental justice and systemic change through storytelling, organizing, and advocacy.

Digital Content Strategy

Develop a digital communications plan (including web and social).

Build content that increases understanding of key issues, grows advocacy skills, and encourages community leadership.

Manage EJCAP social media channels

Work with the EJCAP communications committee and coalition coordinator to identify interesting stories and how they can be packaged in an engaging way for our digital channels.

Print Media and Outreach

Draft press releases, op-eds, and pitches to local and statewide publications.

Develop talking points and other media outreach resources

Help develop an updated press list, particularly of contacts with significant influence in the plastics and environmental sectors.

Research and compile media stories to help understand what our opposition and allies are saying.

Proposals will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

Demonstrated success of the consultant in working with similar non-profit organizations.

Demonstrated understanding of EJCAP’s mission and issues.

Cost effectiveness and likelihood of achieving results.

Ability to meet regularly biweekly via Zoom with the EJCAP comms committee.

Capacity to deliver the scope of services requested in this RFP.
