Programs provide access to students across Los Angeles County and are led by accomplished Teaching Artists with extensive professional experience and training. City Hearts Teaching Artists deliver engaging, inclusive, and compassionate group instruction in their designated art form to students from elementary through high school, regardless of prior experience or skill level. City Hearts Teaching Artists are accomplished, actively working artists with extensive professional experience and training. They bring real-world insight to their teaching while serving as dynamic leaders and mentors for their students.
Roles & responsibilities
City Hearts’ Teaching Artists also demonstrate the ability to:
- Maintain professional and compassionate communication at all times with students, families, school staff, and City Hearts team members.
- Demonstrate punctuality for all work-related activities, including school-site sessions, City Hearts meetings, and professional development.
- Adapt and scaffold instruction to meet the skill level and needs of each class, ensuring meaningful learning for all students.
- Plan and lead rehearsals, student showcases, or exhibitions as required by the program.
- Independently design lessons and activities aligned with the duration and structure of each teaching assignment.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies to maintain a positive learning environment, collaborating with school personnel when needed.
- Support City Hearts led field trips and culminating program events.
- Foster a nurturing, safe, and engaging atmosphere for every student.
- Provide consistent class updates and progress reports to Program Leadership.
- Promptly report any student behavioral or disciplinary concerns to both school personnel and City Hearts Programming staff to support a successful learning environment.
- Assist with pre and post program evaluations, agreements, student recruitment, outreach, and other administrative tasks as requested.
- Attend monthly one-on-one meetings and quarterly Professional Development workshops.
Qualifications
- A clear understanding, passion, and commitment to the City Hearts’ mission.
- A BA or BFA in an artistic field is strongly preferred but not necessarily required. Applicants with extensive training and/or substantial professional experience in their artistic discipline will also be strongly considered.
- Demonstrated excellence in building positive classroom culture and inspiring students to actively participate and create.
- Ability to develop engaging and age-appropriate lesson plans.
- Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to brainstorm and work effectively with fellow Teaching Artists and City Hearts Programming staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, Zoom, and online timekeeping/payroll systems.
- Openness to giving and receiving constructive feedback in a collaborative setting.
- Preference given to candidates with a proven teaching track record or prior classroom experience.
- All personnel must successfully complete fingerprinting and background clearance before working with minors.
