A critical member of the Development & Communications team, the Director of Development and External Affairs, Orange County reports to the Vice President, Development and Communications, with dotted-line reporting relationships to the Director of Business Development and Vice President of Strategy and External Affairs. This position is responsible for cultivating, stewarding, and maintaining relationships with a multi-faceted portfolio of donors, business partners, elected and appointed government officials and community partners to sustain and grow Chrysalis’ Orange County operation.
This position will:
Work with the VP of Development & Communications and CEO to raise at least $875,000 annually from individuals, corporations, and foundations (approximately 80% of time); and,
Work with the Strategy & External Relations team around government relationships and funding ($350,000 annually) and Business Development team around hiring partners, by representing the organization at community, government and business events and meetings (approximately 20% of time).
The candidate will be responsible for frontline fundraising with donors, expanding business development, and community and government relations outreach. The candidate should be entrepreneurial and independent, with the ability to manage multiple priorities. The candidate should also have excellent verbal and written communication skills and have demonstrated experience with public speaking.
Roles & responsibilities
Private Fundraising – Individuals, Corporate, and Foundations & Communications Support (80%)
Help Development Team meet annual fundraising revenue budget (at least $875,000 annually) for Orange County via corporate, foundation, and individual giving, with particular emphasis on individual major gifts.
Manage a portfolio of donors and prospects at various levels of giving capacity and support. Collaborate as appropriate with the Director of Major Gifts, VP, CEO, and Advisory Council in prospect cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, and meet with 8-10 donors per month.
Develop a strategy with the VP of Development & Communications, to grow and sustain the Orange County fundraising program, including donor identification, solicitation, tracking, retention, and stewardship; develop and implement plans for tailored giving opportunities, donor events, and activities throughout the year.
In collaboration with the Director of Institutional Giving, work to develop corporate and foundation philanthropic support; serve as the on-site point of contact for institutional donors;
Provide staff leadership to the Orange County Advisory Board and support members on donor identification and stewardship efforts.
Work with the VP, Development and Communications and the Director of Communications to generate compelling donor communication collateral and engage in Orange County specific media relations.
Integrate the work of the Development & Communications Department in Orange County by engaging with and championing the work of center staff members from all other departments; this could include collaborating with the OC Program Director on Client Service initiatives, Volunteer and Program staff’s implementation of corporate social responsibility engagement opportunities, or the Direct Hire program’s partnerships with business hiring through Chrysalis.
Use Raiser’s Edge/RENXT and Salesforce to track all donor and client data.
Other duties as assigned.
Government & Business Relations – Including Support for Public Funding (20%)
Represent Chrysalis at community, business, and government events that are in line with the goals of the organization.
Work with the Director of Business Development to cultivate hiring partner prospecting and relationship building. Work in coordination with business development team members, handing off prospective hiring partner relationships to team members to fill openings.
Coordinate public sector relationship-building efforts with the policy and government relations team, including use of Chrysalis’ Salesforce CRM.
Support in maintenance and renewals of current government grants (approximately $350,000 for Orange County) and continually monitor for new opportunities for public funding, handing off grant applications / opportunities to the Strategy & External Relations team as they arise.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Commitment to the organizational mission and sensitivity to the needs of low-income and disenfranchised populations
5+ years working in direct fundraising and/or external affairs experience, including demonstrated major gift cultivation and solicitation.
Existing knowledge and awareness of Anaheim/Orange County stakeholders, including the local philanthropic community.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented, highly organized strategic thinker; able to set and meet impact goals and deadlines.
Motivated, independent self-starter with the ability to prioritize between and execute on multiple areas of focus.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or equivalent experience required.
A proven ability to establish, maintain, and deepen relationships that increase the visibility and financial resources of an organization.
Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge/RE NXT strongly preferred; experience with an equivalent CRM is required.
Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining confidentiality and good working relationships.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team.
Reliable transportation to meet with clients outside of the office.
