About this job

The Youth Sports Coach provides a positive and safe experience for youth while they learn individual and team sports skills, maintain team principles and values, develop sportsmanship and fair play, and increase their self expression abilities. Coaches with Affirmative Athletics serve as an adult role model/mentor, teaching and encouraging youth through positive reinforcement and open dialogue.

JOB GOALS:

Provide leadership in helping each youth participant achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.

Teach youth to respect themselves, their peers, their elders, their coaches, and their community.

Engage with youth participants in weekly “review and reflection” sessions and journal writing exercises to encourage self-expression and develop emotional awareness.

Provide students competitive opportunities to develop teamwork on and off the court/field.

Roles & responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Organize 2x / week practices with youth participants

Manage 1x / week competitions with youth

Work individually and in group settings to develop skills, respect and sportsmanship among all youth participants

Participate in 1x / week “review and reflection” sessions with youth, including journal writing sessions and open discussion on past weeks’ practices & games.

Handle and prepare incident reports when needed

Coaches are required to uphold the organization’s rules and conduct, always maintaining a professional attitude with youth, fellow coaches, staff and affiliated personnel.

Organizational Relationships: Youth Sports Coaches work under the supervision and direction of the Program Director, and in close partnership with the Program Impact Management Lead.

Qualifications

Must live within a reasonable commuting distance to San Dimas & La Verne, CA (East LA County)

Must be available 3 weekday afternoons 3:00pm - 6:00pm

Must be available Saturdays 9:00am - 3:00pm

Must attend all scheduled Affirmative Athletics’ functions, training events and coaches’ meetings

Must pass Live Scan (criminal background check via fingerprinting)

Minimum Age: 21

High School diploma or GED equivalency

Preferred Qualifications

Two plus years of experience providing sports instruction, activities and competition with a youth focused organization (Ages 13-18).

Demonstrated experience leading groups with the ability to engage and inspire youth.

Commitment to serving the greater community and at-promise youth.

Motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.

Conceptual ability for the larger perspective with a strong attention to detail and multitasking.

Experience interacting with diverse communities and the ability to integrate into an existing community.

Spanish fluency a plus

Strong interest in youth development.

Familiar with MS Word, MS Excel, internet, e-mail.

Ability to maintain professional standards under pressure and time bound projects.
