Founded in 1923, the ACLU SoCal has been at the forefront of many major efforts to protect civil liberties, civil rights, and equal justice in California. Principled and nonpartisan, ACLU SoCal has offices in Los Angeles, Orange County (Orange), the Inland Empire (San Bernardino), and Kern County (Bakersfield). ACLU SoCal tackles a vast array of issues, including criminal justice, police practices, First Amendment rights, gender equity and reproductive justice, LGBTQ rights, immigrants’ rights, education equity, and economic justice.

The Deputy Director of Philanthropy (D.D.) reports directly to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) and is responsible for providing direction and management of the ACLU of Southern California’s Individual Giving Program including the Annual Fund (gifts of $1,000-$9,000), Major Gifts (gifts of $10,000+), and Planned Giving (DeSilver Society) programs; supervising a team of fundraisers; and personally managing a select portfolio of major donors and prospects with capacity to make annual gifts of $50,000+ . This position will also support departmental administrative priorities, including assessing performance metrics, budget projections and external messaging, as well as help advance a culture of philanthropy organization-wide.
Roles & responsibilities
Individual Giving Program Direction (40%)
• In consultation with the CDO, develop and execute ACLU SoCal’s annual individual giving fundraising plan to deepen donor relationships, increase the number of donors and grow revenue from annual fundraising activities; analyze and monitor progress toward goals and recommend adjustments, as needed.
• Develop and manage the Individual Giving Program work plan to ensure effective team work as well as open communication around project deadlines, benchmarks, and related tasks.
• Develop and manage integration of planned giving prospects into current portfolios, including creating systems to track efficacy of program. In consultation with National Planned Giving team, create regular opportunities for Individual Giving team to strengthen their planned giving expertise.
• Provide guidance, coaching and leadership to direct reports. Ensure that each employee meets their job goals and professional development objectives.
• Oversee the execution of Individual Giving Team cultivation and appeal calendar, including the proliferation of monthly written donor communications, donor events, and special projects.
• Host bi-monthly individual giving team meetings that feature strength building opportunities.
• Provide industry knowledge, monitor industry trends, and implement best practices.
Portfolio Management & Administration (50%)
• In consultation with the CDO, manage a select portfolio of about 75-100 major and leadership donors and prospects, including their cultivation, stewardship and solicitation. In addition manage a small portfolio of planned giving prospects.
• Create individual goals and a comprehensive plan based on research for each person in the portfolio. Perform donor and prospect research.
• Record all interactions and post-meeting reports promptly in database and communicate all aspects of meeting, from set-up to follow-up, to other team members as needed.
• Maintain up-to-date and accurate database records. Track portfolio activity and progress. Design and regularly review reports that accurately reflect portfolio activity and performance.
• Serve as liaison to the ACLU National Development Resources team and Leadership & Planned Giving team, ensuring that National development programs are integrated into local program including partnering and coordinating with National development staff working on SoCal donors.
• Collaborate with Strategic Partnerships and Marketing to develop and implement shared donor strategies for fundraising events and annual auction.
• Oversee the design and production of cultivation events for portfolio donors throughout the year, varying in topics/staff and location to match interests, and maximize outreach.
• Stay well-versed in the current work of the ACLU, locally and nationally, and be an effective representative of the organization. Work with the appropriate staff to secure project information and use this information to develop materials directed at individual donors/prospects.
• Other duties as assigned.
Department Administrative (10%)
• In partnership with the CDO, build and assess performance metrics for the department.
• In partnership with the CDO and Finance Department, help create budget and projections, including monthly reporting.
• In consultation with the national, statewide and affiliate Communications Departments create development centric external messaging, and provide regular educational opportunities on this messaging for development department staff. Coordinate with Communications team on calendar of activity throughout the year.
• In consultation with the Advocacy Department, manage bi-monthly team meetings focused on strengthening development department knowledge of programmatic efforts.
• Participate in the Development team as a cooperative, positive team player.
• Help maintain a positive, respectful, welcoming, and professional environment for employees and volunteers.
• Develop a solid understanding of ACLU’s structure, programs, office protocols, and equipment.
• Attend certain ACLU functions and assist in other ways as assigned.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Minimum of five years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, with progressively responsible experience at a level that demonstrates experience implementing successful strategies for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors as part of a broad-based individual giving program;
• Minimum of four years of experience managing staff, with an emphasis on providing direction and coaching to out-the-door fundraisers;
• Committed to a donor-centric, results-oriented and entrepreneurial approach to fundraising and problem solving;
• Demonstrated experience and strong management skills including a proven ability to motivate, coach and inspire staff;
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication and presentation skills. Ability to understand and follow many different areas of civil rights work, and to describe many different areas of work in a way that is concise, compelling, and easy to understand for donors and prospective donors.
• Strong organizational skills. Ability to develop long-term plans, set objectives, and track progress towards achieving objectives. Familiarity with the concepts of moves management preferred.
• Personal initiative, curiosity about people, and a sense of humor. Friendly, outgoing, and collaborative approach and a strong team-oriented style.
• Proficiency with office technology and information and donor databases, preferably Salesforce.
• Must be available for travel within Southern California and limited travel outside California.
• Must be available for some weekend and evening responsibilities.

The salary range for this position is $125,000- $135,000.
