Join ACE as a Safe Passage Worker and make a direct impact in the lives of individuals and families needing critical support. The Safe Passage Initiative will focus on implementing Safe Passage services near selected middle and high schools, introducing the Safe Haven Initiative in partnership with community stakeholders, local businesses, and supporting high-risk students.
In this role, you’ll provide safe passage to ensure the safety and well-being of students as they travel to and from school. By providing transportation, you will reduce the risk of gang recruitment, bullying, etc. Your responsibilities will include peacemaking, incident response, intake, and connecting participants with essential resources in the community. As a liaison, you’ll foster collaboration and build bridges within the community, helping to create safer and more supportive environments for those in need.
Roles & responsibilities
Foster positive relationships with community members, partner organizations, and local gangs.
Build relationships with students and their families to promote trust and reduce vulnerability to gang recruitment, bullying, or violence.
Participate in cultural and community-building activities/events.
Provide visible presence before school (arrival times) and after school (dismissal times) along designated Safe Passage routes.
Conduct proactive outreach and engagement with students to promote safety and offer support or referrals when needed.
Share information with partners regarding safety concerns and areas requiring enhanced coverage or support.
Maintain awareness of community tensions, conflicts, or potential safety threats, and report immediately to the site supervisor.
Support school administration and Community Violence Intervention Workers with on-campus presence as needed to de-escalate tensions and ensure smooth student transitions.
Engage with local businesses along Safe Passage routes to identify safe spaces and strengthen community partnerships.
Use motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and harm-reduction techniques to help participants achieve their care plan goals, as directed by ECM Director.
Enter data into participant databases, maintains accurate case files, and assists in generating reports to meet funders/ACE/ECM and Medi-Cal compliance requirements.
Monitor treatment and care compliance, communicating findings to the Lead Care Manager and other interdisciplinary team members.
Co-create plans with students, families, and school staff to offer mentorship, counseling, and wraparound Intervention support.
Maintain regular coordination with school counselors and administrators to track progress and adjust plans.
Participates in all Intervention events and facilitates workshops, including Summer Night Lights.
Reduce gang violence by reducing tensions, developing peace treaties, rumor control, community canvassing, conflict resolution, intervention services, and holding pro-social activities/events in and around school campus.
Offer in-school workshops on personal safety, navigating peer pressure, and when/how to seek help.
Other duties as assigned.
Participate in weekly Safe Passage team meetings to discuss:
- Route coverage updates.
- Safety concerns or emerging conflicts.
- Success stories and impact highlights.
- adjustments needed to enhance student protection.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Is sensitive to community, cultural and personal dignity of program participants and is able to successfully engage, assess, and plan services for participants typical of the program’s target population.
Recognizes appropriate boundaries and limitations on interactions with program participants, students, and their families, and the need to maintain professional standards and practices.
Is familiar with standard approaches to accurate participant record keeping, including timely charting, notation formats, content limitations, and confidentiality practices.
Possesses knowledge of programs, regulations, and procedures regarding human services, social services, justice, and workforce development.
Knowledge of community/gang dynamics within the GRYD Zone.
Able to operate within ACE’s designated GRYD zone, exposing oneself to gangs found within the zone.
Able to work in assigned locations that may expose oneself to hazardous conditions or in extreme physical discomfort or distress.
Ability to assess conditions and responsiveness to interventions.
Possesses necessary de-escalation skills to provide crisis and community violence intervention in the community.
General proficiency in navigating and using technology.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout facilities and community.
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Must be able to bend, lift, stretch, climb, and crawl to provide services.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent community intervention experience.
Preferred but not required: Previous justice-involvement.
Formal gang intervention training (e.g. LAVITA) preferred.
Strong License to Operate in the community.
Spanish language skills, verbal and written preferred.
Possess a current California Driver’s License, clean DMV record & adequate auto insurance.
Must submit to a Department of Justice Criminal background check.
Initial TB employment clearance required.
The anticipated pay for candidates who will work in California is $28.85/hr. The offered pay to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to years of experience within the job, years of experience within the required industry, education, etc.
