A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth and community center in South Central Los Angeles. APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance and art classes, fitness and health and wellness opportunities. As youth participate in our programs, they discover interests and talents and develop a better sense of themselves and their place in the world around them. About this job

The Associate Director of Institutional Giving is responsible for developing grant solicitation strategies, overseeing institutional support streams and maintaining sustainable grant management processes for A Place Called Home. Supervised by the Director of Development, the Associate Director of Institutional Giving will directly manage a personal portfolio of 80-100 active grant prospects; oversee identification, qualification and cultivation of potential funders; manage solicitation, development, stewarding and reporting on grants from foundations, corporations and governmental agencies; and oversee grant administration. The Associate Director of Institutional Giving will supervise an Assistant Grant Manager and grant writing independent contractor as budgeted. In collaboration with fundraising partners, the Associate Director will help build a strong pipeline of institutional donors. The position requires strong project management skills; a desire for interdepartmental collaboration; the ability to develop, manage and maintain systems; superb coaching, mentoring and management skills; and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Roles & responsibilities

Grant Seeking & Fundraising

  • Work with development and programmatic leaderships to plan for and execute an aggressive grant solicitation program and long-term plan for growth, including foundation and corporate grants, and a possible expansion of the agency’s government funding portfolio;
  • Develop and implement solicitation and cultivation strategies for grant seeking in order to meet annual fundraising goals;
  • Prepare and submit timely grant proposals according to established processes and procedures; compose cogent and compelling narratives, letters and other written communications in support of APCH’s program priorities and organizational goals
  • Partner effectively and enthusiastically with program staff to track grant spending and develop content rich narratives that accurately depict new and ongoing services and ethically reflect the APCH community;
  • Develop proposal and project budgets as required by funders; partner with Accounting to produce accurate and readable grant financial reports, and ensure aligned grant accrual and payment records between Salesforce and Quickbooks Online;
  • Cultivate strong relationships and stewardship practices on behalf of the agency with assigned institutional funders;
  • Research and develop grant sources (private, state, federal) independently and as per referrals, consistent with APCH’s goals and priorities; interpret proposal guidelines, funder interests and priorities for program staff and agency leadership as required;
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of current funding trends in youth development and education, and the broader philanthropic landscape;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned, including contributing to “all-hands” fundraising activities and community events.

Management & Grant Administration

  • Supervise an Assistant Grant Manager with care, compassion, diligence and a strong focus on accountability, productivity and goal attainment; provide all necessary coaching and mentoring to achieve excellence in work quality; manage according to agreed upon metrics and benchmarks;
  • Engage and manage independent contractor(s) for grant writing services as APCH’s annual budget allows; ensure work quality and punctual delivery of work product;
  • Provide strong project management for grant-seeking activities and the management and recording of grant activity within the APCH fundraising database systems;
  • Serve as project lead for grant opportunities, overseeing proposal development, and reporting on project activities and financials; track relevant grant submission dates, benchmarks and milestones; support grant opportunities outside of portfolio as needed;
  • In partnership with Program Operations, monitor and document grant expenditures and grant-funded activity to ensure compliance with federal or state regulations and specific terms and conditions of grant awards; troubleshoot ongoing processes and work collaboratively to refine systems in alignment with agency growth;
  • Develop and maintain process and protocol documents for both established and evolving systems, updating as necessary;
  • Partner with the Associate Director of Development and others to ensure data integrity and accuracy of APCH’s donor database (Salesforce), and record donor interactions per moves management protocols; develop data reports as requested; use data strategically to support decision making.

Technical and Performance Skills

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A mixture of education and experience
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of progressive experience as a non-profit fundraiser with grants oriented experience
  • Proven success in securing grants of $75,000 or more
  • Supervisory and management experience a plus
  • Experience with Salesforce or other donor databases a plus
  • Experience with government grants a plus
  • Experience in non-profit youth development sector a plus
  • Experience with Los Angeles and California philanthropic market and donor relations a plus

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Able to work in dynamic and high noise level environment typical of a youth center
  • Able to work some evenings and weekends
  • Sitting for long periods, some standing/walking
