What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
The 2020 pandemic intensified social isolation, especially among older adults in long-term care, where restrictions deepened feelings of loneliness and disconnection. Loneliness is now recognized as a public health crisis, with lasting impacts on mental and physical well-being. While visitation policies have eased, the effects of isolation persist. At the same time, school-age children are facing increased mental health challenges, highlighting that this crisis affects all ages. The Golden Link seeks to address this dual challenge by fostering meaningful intergenerational connections. By bringing generations together through shared experiences and mutual support, this initiative offers a proactive, community-driven approach to healing isolation and strengthening bonds across age groups.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
To address social isolation, this project fosters community resilience by uniting two distinct groups: educational institutions and senior communities. It creates a shared virtual space where older adults and students collaborate, learn, and grow together. Older adults will volunteer in schools through virtual platforms—supporting teachers, leading engaging activities, reading stories, tutoring, mentoring, and participating in breakout rooms to assist students needing extra help.
To ensure sustainability, the project will recruit college students as fellows and mentors to facilitate technology use and lead intergenerational activities, acting as a bridge between age groups.
This initiative is unique in its creation of an inclusive, intergenerational community where every participant—regardless of age—can contribute meaningfully. It promotes mutual respect, shared purpose, and learning across generations. The virtual format increases accessibility, especially for older adults with mobility challenges, and aligns with needs highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is also scalable, adaptable for various educational and senior settings, and can be tailored for specific goals, such as career exploration for middle and high school students. Additionally, the program would have a great impact on college volunteers by providing opportunities for them to perfect communication and management skills, while gaining practical experience in understanding generational differences.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
If successful, this initiative will transform Los Angeles County into a more connected, compassionate, and resilient community. Older adults will experience reduced isolation and renewed purpose by engaging meaningfully with younger generations. Students will gain academic support, mentorship, and a deeper appreciation for the wisdom of older adults. Schools, senior communities, and colleges will form lasting partnerships that foster mutual respect and collaboration. By bridging generational divides through shared stories, learning, and technology, this program will create a model of inclusive engagement that uplifts all ages. Ultimately, Los Angeles County will become a place where community members—young and old—are valued, supported, and empowered to thrive together.
