What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
The Forge seeks to address the urgent challenges foster, NEET, & Opportunity Youth (ages 16-24) face as they transition to adulthood—homelessness, incarceration, education gaps, and unprepared parenting. In Los Angeles County, 30–50% of foster youth become homeless within 18 months of aging out. Nationally, 1 in 3 former foster youth are incarcerated by age 26, while only about 50% graduate high school on time, far below their peers. Many also become young parents without the support or resources to succeed and nearly half of the children born to teen moms in foster care will end up in foster care themselves- continuing a generational cycle of instability. The Forge provides these youth with hands-on training, mentorship, and business skills to build economic independence and confidence. By forging pathways to education, employment, and entrepreneurship, The Forge empowers youth to break these negative trends and create brighter, more stable futures.

By fostering creativity and practical skills in a supportive space, The Forge addresses homelessness, unemployment, and instability among foster youth, helping them forge lasting futures.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
When The Forge is successful, Los Angeles County will see a significant transformation in how foster youth transition to adulthood. More young people will have practical skills, confidence, and sustainable income streams, reducing rates of homelessness, incarceration, and unemployment among this vulnerable group. Foster youth will have access to a supportive community that nurtures their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, fostering greater economic independence and self-worth. This initiative will create a replicable model of empowerment that can expand countywide, shifting the narrative from foster youth as at-risk to foster youth as innovators and leaders—ultimately strengthening families and communities across LA County.
