What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?

LGBTQ+ individuals face disproportionately high rates of substance use, mental health challenges, and suicide, often stemming from trauma, discrimination, and lack of affirming care. Yet affirming, culturally competent treatment options remain scarce and financially inaccessible for many. At Rainbow Hill Recovery, we recognize that healing can only happen in safe spaces where individuals are seen, respected, and supported without judgment. We are addressing the urgent need for LGBTQ+ specific, trauma-informed, and accessible care that meets people where they are and empowers them to recover with dignity.

Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.

This grant will support Rainbow Hill Recovery’s LGBTQ+ affirming outpatient treatment program, a life-saving initiative that provides mental health and substance use services to individuals who too often fall through the cracks. Rooted in lived experience and clinical excellence, our program offers individual therapy, group counseling, case management, and peer support—all within a space where clients are celebrated for who they are.
For many LGBTQ+ individuals, especially those who are uninsured, underinsured, or rejected by family, treatment can feel out of reach. We are changing that by removing financial and systemic barriers to care. With this funding, we will be able to offer services on a sliding scale, expand outreach efforts, and ensure that no one is turned away due to cost. Every person deserves the chance to heal in a space that honors their identity, their story, and their potential. Rainbow Hill Recovery is here to remind them they are not alone, and they are worthy of recovery.

Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.

If our work is successful, Los Angeles County will be a place where LGBTQ+ individuals no longer have to choose between being themselves and getting the care they need. It will be a community where queer and trans people in crisis are met with understanding, not judgment. Where healing is possible, treatment is accessible, and recovery is celebrated out loud. We’ll see fewer lives lost to addiction, fewer people suffering in silence, and more people thriving in their truth. Our success means more love, more hope, and more belonging right here at home.
