Together for the Planet: Community Climate Mural
Together for the Planet: Community Climate Mural brings Long Beach neighbors together through art and action to explore local environmental challenges. What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
Our project encourages greater and more creative use of parks, with a focus on equitable access for all. Many parks are located near major bus routes, making public transit a convenient option; for others, bikes and scooters provide mobile alternatives. By addressing how people get to the park, our project makes it easier for the community to participate in measuring the environment and creating the mural.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
Together for the Planet: Community Climate Mural empowers people in Long Beach to take action on environmental issues and come together in local parks. Through the measurement and tracking of air quality, noise pollution, heat, and temperature, the project raises awareness about the harmful impacts of the urban heat island effect, poor air quality, and excessive noise in these neighborhoods.
Participants use data collection tools to gather real-time statistics, documenting environmental injustices faced daily by residents. This information then inspires a collaborative mural at local parks. Transforming raw data into bold, visual stories that reflect community concerns and call others to action.
To support access and increase park use, the project also promotes public transportation, encouraging participants and residents to use nearby bus routes and transit options to reach the parks. For those farther away, bikes and scooters offer flexible, mobile alternatives. Ensuring everyone can take part in this creative and meaningful work.
The collected data will not only inform the mural but also be shared with city leaders to advocate for healthier urban policies and environmental justice. By turning everyday experiences into art and action, participants become powerful advocates for a greener, more sustainable Long Beach. Lighting the path to a healthier future, one informed step at a time.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
Long Beach will serve as a model for how communities unite to address environmental challenges through art, data, and collective action. Residents will become more aware of their local climate, use public transit to reach parks, and feel empowered to advocate for their neighborhoods. Climate murals will transform public spaces into landmarks of pride, education, and awareness.
Scaling the project will allow more neighborhoods to turn challenges into bold, visual solutions, driving momentum for a healthier, more sustainable future.
Launching in West Long Beach, this early-stage effort will track success through community participation, environmental data, and a co-created mural. Surveys will assess awareness shifts, while feedback on park use and transit will inform outcomes. Civic impact will be gauged by presenting findings to city leaders to advocate for environmental justice.
