What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
Many Green Dot seniors—primarily first-generation, low-income students of color—face significant barriers in the transition from high school to college, career, or military pathways. While they've worked hard to earn postsecondary opportunities, they often lack access to the networks, resources, and guidance needed to navigate the next steps successfully. Hidden college costs, unfamiliar systems, and limited exposure to real-world professionals can derail even the most motivated students. Without structured support, these seniors risk losing momentum after graduation, leading to decreased college persistence and career readiness. In fact, the first year of college is when students are most likely to drop out, emphasizing the enormous role this first-year plays in post-secondary outcomes. We seek to address this critical transition point by providing a high-impact, equity-driven experience that prepares students not just to graduate—but to launch.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
This grant will support Green Dot Public Schools in launching a dynamic, full-day College & Career Launch event for the Class of 2026 across all 12 of our high schools. Designed to empower seniors as they prepare to transition beyond graduation, the event will feature alumni panels, professional networking practice, and breakout sessions tailored to students pursuing four-year universities, community college, career pathways, or military service.
During the event, we will also collect student contact and pathway information to build a robust alumni network that fosters long-term support and engagement. In addition, we will award Opportunity Fund scholarships to select seniors attending high-persistence four-year colleges to help cover hidden costs—such as college fees, dorm supplies, laptops, textbooks, or transportation—that too often stand in the way of enrollment and success. This initiative ensures that every Green Dot senior is not only celebrated but also equipped and connected for the journey ahead.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
Los Angeles County will see a stronger, more equitable pipeline of first-generation, college-bound, and career-ready young adults—especially from historically underserved communities. Green Dot seniors will not only graduate with a diploma but with a clear, supported path forward, reducing summer melt and increasing college persistence, workforce entry, and military readiness.
Over time, our alumni network will grow into a powerful engine of mentorship, opportunity, and upward mobility across the county. This initiative will help close achievement and access gaps, fostering a more inclusive, skilled, and resilient generation of Angelenos who are equipped to lead in their communities.
Moreover, Green Dot is currently the only charter management organization in Los Angeles that consistently offers a Launch to College and Career event. By expanding and strengthening this program, we hope to refine our model and look to share best practices with others in the public education field.
