What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
Millions of older adults in Los Angeles face limited literacy and digital skills, creating serious barriers to healthcare access, economic participation, and social connection. This issue disproportionately impacts low-income Black and Brown communities, where systemic inequality, ageism, and lack of culturally relevant education have left many seniors behind. Without the ability to read confidently or navigate online tools, older adults struggle with everyday tasks—such as scheduling appointments, applying for jobs, or engaging civically. As society becomes increasingly digital, this population risks greater isolation and economic insecurity. Addressing this issue is urgent: by 2030, one in five U.S. residents will be over 65. If we don’t act now, thousands more will be left disconnected from the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
The Senior Literacy & Tech Empowerment Accelerator is a 16-week, culturally responsive program designed to bridge the literacy and digital divide for underserved adults aged 50 and older in Los Angeles County. This initiative provides English literacy instruction alongside digital skills training, including internet navigation, email use, basic computing, and an introduction to artificial intelligence—tailored to older learners.
Through a blend of classroom instruction, peer-to-peer learning, and one-on-one mentorship, participants gain practical tools to navigate healthcare systems, manage finances, engage civically, and pursue income-generating opportunities. The curriculum integrates trauma-informed and culturally relevant materials reflecting the lived experiences of Black and Brown seniors.
The program culminates in a capstone project showcase, where participants present digital creations—letters, videos, websites, or photo books—crafted for family and community. This celebration reinforces intergenerational connection, builds confidence, and affirms that it’s never too late to lead, create, and inspire.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
If our work is successful, Los Angeles County will lead the nation in digital inclusion for older adults. Seniors will no longer be left behind—they’ll confidently navigate healthcare, access services, and contribute to their communities. We’ll equip 150 underserved adults 50+ with literacy and tech skills in year one, then scale across LA through libraries, housing sites, and train-the-trainer models. Our vision aligns with LA County’s Digital Equity goals and Aging Roadmap, creating lasting change that connects generations. When seniors are empowered to engage digitally, they uplift their families, neighborhoods, and the systems around them.
