What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
Many of the young people we serve have been deeply affected by recent federal policies that have increased ICE presence in our community. These policies have created an environment of fear and uncertainty, leaving many young individuals feeling vulnerable, anxious, and powerless. They have witnessed friends, family members, and community members being taken away, which has only heightened their sense of insecurity and grief. As a result, many of these youth are struggling with intense emotions such as anger, sadness, and fear, often feeling that their voices are unheard or ignored in the broader conversation about their safety and future. It is crucial that we acknowledge these experiences and provide spaces for them to express their feelings, be heard, and find support amidst these challenging circumstances.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
This grant will support a youth-centered artivism program designed to provide young people affected by increased ICE presence and federal policies a safe space to process and express their emotions through creative outlets. The initiative will empower participants aged 12-24 to explore their feelings about the current political climate—particularly the impact of ICE in their communities—by creating visual art, spoken word, and multimedia.
Through a series of workshops facilitated by local artists and activists, participants will learn how to channel their experiences and emotions into powerful artistic expressions that highlight issues of fear, vulnerability, and resilience. The program aims to foster a sense of community and agency, giving youth a platform to voice their stories and advocate for change.
The culmination of the project will be an art show held at our downtown Pomona gallery, where participants can share their work with the broader community, raising awareness and promoting dialogue around immigration policies and their effects. Additionally, the program will include community engagement activities, such as panel discussions and youth-led presentations, to expand the conversation and encourage solidarity.
Overall, this initiative seeks to empower young people by validating their experiences, amplifying their voices, and fostering activism through creative expression, ultimately helping them feel seen, heard, and supported in the face of systemic challenges.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
If successful, Los Angeles County will become a more inclusive and compassionate community that amplifies youth voices affected by immigration policies. The program will foster understanding and empathy, encouraging community-wide dialogue. Youth participants will feel more supported, confident, and empowered to advocate for themselves and their peers. Their artistic expressions—through visual art, spoken word, and multimedia—will raise awareness and inspire others to stand against injustice.
Public exhibitions and events will promote greater solidarity among residents and policymakers. The project will also inspire local organizations to adopt more youth-led initiatives, fostering resilience and agency. Ultimately, Los Angeles County will be seen as a leader in social change, demonstrating that empowering youth through creative expression can drive progress and build a stronger, more connected community committed to justice and equity.
