What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?

Many community members seek mentorship, training, and new job opportunities to improve their economic well-being. However, their focus on economic mobility often leaves little time or energy for civic engagement due to limited bandwidth. Our goal is to address this gap by supporting residents in building a strong foundation through targeted skills development, while also creating a platform for civic participation. This will empower individuals to become community leaders, fostering sustainable growth and increased resident involvement in local decision-making.

Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.

The RISE program is dedicated to empowering residents of Compton and surrounding communities through a comprehensive blend of civic education, leadership development, and job readiness initiatives. It offers workshops to increase understanding of local, state, and federal government, voting, and civic participation, fostering informed and engaged community members. The program also supports the formation of block clubs and facilitates community roundtables to promote collaboration, safety, and local advocacy. To address economic needs, RISE provides resume writing, interview training, dress-for-success workshops, and career exploration activities. By integrating these elements, the program aims to build a resilient, active, and economically empowered community where residents can become leaders, advocate for change, and improve their quality of life. Through this holistic approach, RISE seeks to strengthen community ties, increase civic engagement, and create sustainable pathways for economic growth.

Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.

If successful, the RISE program will foster a more engaged and empowered Los Angeles County, where residents actively participate in civic life, advocate for their communities, and build leadership skills. Currently, civic engagement is low due to barriers like limited access to resources, lack of awareness, and feeling disconnected from local government. This often results in underrepresentation and unaddressed community needs. By providing education, mentorship, and forums for dialogue, our work will increase civic participation, strengthen community bonds, and build a grassroots leadership pipeline. Ultimately, LA County will be a more resilient, inclusive, and participatory place where residents feel empowered to shape their future.
