What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
When I first arrived from Japan, I couldn’t make myself understood in English. I felt deeply alone, stopped talking, and sank into depression until a Japanese community group helped me find my footing. Sadly, this isolation is all too common for LA’s immigrant and refugee families. Limited English proficiency, unfamiliar systems, and cultural disconnection prevent people from accessing vital services—benefits, housing, healthcare, legal aid—and trap them in cycles of underemployment and instability. Mirror Mii bridges these divides by delivering on-demand, multilingual voice assistance that demystifies complex processes, surfaces individual talents, and connects users to trusted community resources—enabling full participation in civic and economic life.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
Mirror Mii will deploy an AI-driven voice-agent service across community centers, libraries, shelters, and nonprofit sites in Los Angeles to directly support immigrants and refugees:
Localized Deployment & Onboarding
• Install phone-hotlines and voice-kiosk stations in five neighborhoods (East LA, South Bay, Central LA, San Gabriel Valley, West LA)
• Train community staff and volunteers to onboard users and troubleshoot access
AI Customization & Content
• Expand our multilingual knowledge base with local legal, housing, healthcare, and workforce resources
• Integrate talent-profiling dialogue to surface each user’s skills, credentials, and career goals
Partnership & Referral Network
• Establish referral pathways with ten employers, training programs, housing authorities, clinics, and legal-aid organizations
• Automate “warm handoffs” by securely transmitting user profiles and needs for rapid follow-up
Continuous Improvement & Impact
• Collect anonymized metrics (usage, referral success, satisfaction) to refine AI responses and close gaps
• Track outcomes: completed applications, scheduled appointments, and job placements
By combining 24/7 multilingual, emotion-sensitive voice assistance with deep community partnerships, Mirror Mii will break language and cultural barriers, accelerate access to critical services, and unlock employment pathways for LA’s newcomers.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.

Greater Service Access: Thousands more immigrants and refugees completing benefit applications, housing requests, medical screenings, and legal filings without language or technology hurdles.
Stronger Economic Participation: A measurable rise in job referrals and placements as users’ talents are surfaced and matched to local employers and training programs.
Improved Social Integration: Reduced social isolation as newcomers gain confidence navigating schools, healthcare, transit, and community events in their own languages.
Digital & Cultural Inclusion: A new standard for 24/7, voice-first access to government and nonprofit resources—especially in under-served neighborhoods—closing the digital divide.
Scalable Community Impact: A replicable model that empowers community partners county-wide, amplifies service capacity, and drives collaboration across nonprofits, employers, and agencies to support lasting newcomer success.
