What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
Los Angeles County is facing an urgent crisis of unsheltered homelessness, especially among two-parent families, single-parent families, non-traditional families, and single adults. Maymuna 13 addresses this gap by providing immediate emergency and interim housing, accepting referrals 24/7, and prioritizing clients typically overlooked by larger systems. Many referred individuals arrive without income or access to LAHSA-coordinated resources, making it nearly impossible to transition into permanent housing within the standard three-month stay. The need for transitional housing is critical—not only for shelter but for essential navigation services that help clients secure identification, benefits, and housing referrals. Maymuna 13 steps in where larger systems fall short, offering peer and housing navigation—even if currently supported by volunteers—and case-by-case extensions to ensure clients are not prematurely discharged back to the streets.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
This grant will support Maymuna 13’s expansion of its emergency and interim housing program to better serve unsheltered two-parent families, single-parent families, non-traditional families, and single adults in South Los Angeles. The program provides up to 90 days of shelter, with case-by-case extensions, while delivering critical peer and housing navigation services to help clients secure income, benefits, and permanent housing placement. Grant funding will allow Maymuna 13 to transition from volunteer-led support to paid staff, ensuring consistent, professional system navigation, warm hand-offs to LAHSA resources, and documentation readiness. Available 24/7 for emergency placements, Maymuna 13 fills a vital service gap when other programs are at capacity or inaccessible. With over five years of community-based experience, this program is uniquely positioned to provide trauma-informed, family-centered support to stabilize housing-insecure populations and break the cycle of unsheltered homelessness.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
If Maymuna 13’s work is successful, Los Angeles County will see a measurable reduction in unsheltered homelessness among families and single adults who often fall through the cracks of traditional systems. Our vision is a community where no family is left without shelter due to income barriers or bureaucratic delays. By strengthening peer and housing navigation services, improving access to documentation and benefits, and rapidly connecting clients to permanent housing, Maymuna 13 will shorten the time individuals spend unhoused and increase long-term housing stability. Success means more equitable access to interim housing, faster housing placements, and stronger community trust in smaller, grassroots providers. Our impact will be seen in reduced street homelessness, increased coordination with LAHSA systems, and empowered families who move from crisis to stability with dignity and support. Los Angeles will be safer, healthier, and more humane for its most vulnerable residents.
