Margins Health Wellness Pop-Ups
Margins Health Wellness Pop-Ups, are a recurring series of community-centered events aimed at promoting healthcare access, wellness education, and resource empowerment throughout the Los Angeles Harbor Gateway area. Our mission is to empower community members to lead healthier lives by providing accessible, engaging, and educational experiences centered around health and wellness. We plan to host 1–2 events per month, each tailored to meet the specific needs of the local community.

What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
At Margins Health, we are a dedicated team of health educators and navigators serving the Medi-Cal population across Los Angeles County. Our work brings us face-to-face with individuals and families from all walks of life, many of whom face significant barriers to health education, access to care, and the resources necessary for sustained well-being. A clear and persistent health equity gap exists in our communities, especially among underserved populations. This gap is not simply about access to service, it’s about trust. Much of the disparity stems from the absence of trusted community messengers who can communicate vital health information in a way that is holistic, culturally competent, and community-rooted.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
This grant will support the Margins Health Wellness Pop-Up Initiative, a grassroots health outreach program designed to reduce disparities in healthcare access and education among underserved populations across Los Angeles County, specifically in underserved communities within the Harbor Gateway region (i.e., Watts, San Pedro, Wilmington, and Harbor City). The Wellness Pop-Up Initiative will host 1–2 monthly community events that bring health and wellness services directly into neighborhoods where they are most needed. Each event will be staffed by trained health educators and navigators, many of whom reflect the communities they serve. The program will feature:
Culturally competent health education on topics such as chronic disease prevention, mental health, reproductive health, and more
Assistance with Medi-Cal navigation and accessing care
Referrals to providers if they don't have a primary care provider or dentist
Fitness and wellness activities, such as yoga or group exercise sessions
Nutritional workshops and healthy cooking demonstrations
Resource booths and support services, including food, housing, and behavioral health referrals
Through our Wellness Pop-Up events, held throughout the Harbor Gateway area, we aim to foster connection, empowerment, and visibility. These events are more than just services, they are spaces of belonging where community members can feel seen, heard, and supported.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
If successful, Margins Health’s Wellness Pop-Up Initiative will help close critical health equity gaps across the Harbor Gateway by increasing access to preventive care, health education, and trusted community-based support. Residents in areas like Watts, San Pedro, Wilmington, and Harbor City will be empowered to manage their health, navigate systems, and engage in preventive practices. Trust in healthcare will grow as culturally competent messengers meet people where they are, leading to reduced emergency care reliance and stronger ties between communities and local providers. Ultimately, this initiative will foster a healthier, connected, and equitable Los Angeles; where all residents, regardless of background, have the tools and support needed to thrive.
