Immigrant Women's Education Program

We invest in immigrant Latina women through South Central LAMP’s Family Literacy program, which offers adult education, English language learning, parenting skills, wellness, and advocacy. Our culturally responsive approach strengthens families, promotes educational growth, and fosters community leadership. This grant will help expand trauma-informed wellness programming and improve access to care and vital community resources.

What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?

Immigrant and refugee mothers in South Central Los Angeles—especially undocumented Latina women—face systemic barriers such as limited English proficiency, economic hardship, social isolation, and poor access to health services. These are intensified by trauma, poverty, and fear of deportation, which limit their ability to support their families and engage in community life. While urgent needs like food and shelter are critical, South Central LAMP also invests in long-term empowerment through education.
Since 1993, we’ve offered trauma-informed, culturally responsive programs including ESL, parenting education, early childhood education, and advocacy. Our Family Literacy Program builds confidence, literacy, and leadership, equipping women to advocate for themselves and their children. We believe lasting change comes from helping women realize their power to shape their own futures.

Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.

This grant will support South Central LAMP’s adult education and adult programs in the Family Literacy Program, this includes English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, parenting classes and workshops, parent-teacher interactive literacy activities, early childhood education and one-on-one family advocacy support. The program promotes parent-child learning, community engagement, and access to critical health and wellness services. Our culturally responsive model is grounded in trust and long-term relationship-building with participants.
With this funding, we will expand our workshops to include a six-week series covering:
• Debunking Myths Associated with Immigration Law
• How to Interact with Law Enforcement
• ICE Preparedness
• Mental Health Tools for Battling Stress, Anxiety, and Depression
• Services Provided for Undocumented Individuals
• Frequently Asked Questions
These workshops will empower undocumented Latina mothers with legal literacy, emotional resilience, and practical resources to navigate complex challenges more effectively.

Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.

As South Central LAMP’s Family Literacy Program grows, Los Angeles County will see increased empowerment and well-being among undocumented Latina mothers and their families. Participants gain legal knowledge and emotional resilience, easing fears around immigration and promoting economic stability, mental health, and stronger ties to schools and community resources. Supportive peer networks foster collective strength and reduce isolation.
By encouraging parent engagement and leadership, the program helps break cycles of poverty and builds healthier, more connected communities. Research from Pew and USC Dornsife highlights the deep fears and vulnerabilities this population faces—our program directly addresses these by equipping mothers with tools to navigate systems confidently. In turn, Los Angeles benefits from more inclusive, engaged immigrant communities who contribute to the region’s social and economic vitality.
