Greener Futures LA
Greener Futures LA is a community sustainability initiative focused on supporting elderly and low income residents in District 8 (South Central LA) by providing free cleanups, landscaping and alleyway maintenance to promote safer, greener neighborhoods. Through local hiring and environmentally friendly practices, the project restores pride, reduces blight, and empowers the community to care for its aging population and shared spaces hoping to bring back businesses to the community.

What is the primary issue area that your application will impact?
Green space, park access, and trees
In which areas of Los Angeles will you be directly working?
South LA
In what stage of innovation is this project, program, or initiative?
Pilot or new project, program, or initiative (testing or implementing a new idea)
What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
My understanding is that numerous elderly and low income homeowners cannot sometimes maintain their property nor does the city of Los Angeles have the budget to maintain the trees or trash cleanup in our alleys or street dumping. Failing to maintain neighbors' grass, trees, and trash on the streets leads to overgrowth, fire hazards, pest infestations, and increased illegal dumping which pose safety and health risks--especially for seniors and vulnerable residents. It also contributes to neighborhood blight, lowers property values, and sends a message of neglect that can attract further disinvestment and crime. This has caused local businesses to close their doors and move to nicer neighborhoods. We want to bring businesses back including adding major companies such as Trader Joe's and Sweetgreen to this area of Los Angeles which will bring more revenue to our city.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
Greener Futures LA is a community-led environmental sustainability project focused on revitalizing neighborhoods in District 8 by helping elderly and low-income residents maintain their homes, yards, streets and alleyways. The project will offer bi-monthly cleanups, free landscaping, and trash removal services, while promoting green practices through education and outreach. By hiring local professionals and volunteers, we will support job creation and foster community pride. The initiative will target overgrown lawns, neglected trees, cleanup major streets and debris-cluttered alleyways—common issues that increase fire risks, attract illegal dumping, and lower neighborhood morale. Success will require coordination with city departments, access to proper tools and trucks, and consistent community engagement. We will distribute maintenance manuals to residents, implement beautification plans using native plants, and host sustainability workshops while working with block clubs in each area of Los Angeles to further our goals. Greener Futures LA is about restoring dignity to underserved areas, making streets safer, and creating a cleaner, greener future through collective care and action. We would love to create a non-profit and grow this initiative throughout the entire city of Los Angeles then eventually to Los Angeles County.
