BRIC Summit Powering Sustainability in Entertainment

Los Angeles is world renown for hosting legendary Live Events, including the World Cup (2026), Super Bowl (2027), Summer Olympics (2028) as well as annual Coachella and Stagecoach Festivals. These highly technical live events require an expert workforce skilled in the latest technology. To help existing and aspiring workers across LA secure these high-demand jobs, BRIC Foundation will host its BRIC Summit, which will offer workshops and certifications for our newly developed Sustainability for Entertainment training.

What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?

Global events invite global travel and immersive tourism. For decades, global events were planned and experienced based on disposal resources that left host cities with excessive waste, trash, and expenses. Recently, organizers have begun designing live events that generate less environmental impact. This has now expanded to the very industry that produces these spectacular events. The US Green Building Council has offered sustainability training for years to construction workers but is now developing certifications with BRIC to teach the same methods to entertainment workers. Furthermore, Coalition of Festivals hires crews for music festivals like Coachella and now looks for sustainability skills as part of its hiring practice for audio/video jobs. BRIC expects this movement to expand across more film/TV productions and live events, and we want to ensure that LA’s entertainment workforce gains the required expertise needed to have a competitive advantage as new job openings arise.

Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.

Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.

People around the world come to LA to enjoy its vibrant landscape, culture, and lifestyle. Global travel thrives only when local communities flourish. Success for our Sustainability proposal would encompass positive impact for existing workers and youth career-training. As jobs in the entertainment industry continue to integrate more sustainability practices into their daily responsibilities, employees who gain training and certification will be more competitive applicants years after this grant proposal expires. For high school seniors, classroom training and pre-apprenticeship programs will help them build a foundation for sustainability, which will benefit them in any career they pursue. Long-term, BRIC and USGBC-CA are developing a registered Sustainability apprenticeship program to launch in Los Angeles, which will allow us to expand and scale this focus on sustainability by supporting existing and new workers to have better opportunities to secure industry jobs.
