What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
Rich With Attitude recognizes that BIPOC, low-income, and minority mothers in Greater Los Angeles County face deep-rooted systemic inequities, including income inequality, limited access to critical resources. Many of the mothers we serve are raising multiple children, often on their own, and are determined to break cycles of hardship but face overwhelming barriers such as unreliable transportation and a lack of affordable, accessible childcare. These challenges prevent them from consistently attending our programs, accessing services, and pursuing personal growth or career advancement. We’ve witnessed firsthand the physical and emotional toll this takes, as mothers' brave harsh weather with young children in tow just to reach us. Our goal is to remove these barriers by integrating licensed on-site childcare and providing transportation, ensuring that program participants can safely and consistently access the support, skills, and opportunities needed to build a stable, healthy future.
Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.
The grant will support Rich With Attitude’s Empowered Moms Program, an initiative focused on reducing system involvement and promoting long-term stability for under-resourced and BIPOC mothers in Los Angeles County. The program delivers culturally responsive, wraparound services that address both immediate needs and long-term goals.
Empowered Moms provides mentorship, life and career skills training, self-defense workshops, and community engagement opportunities that help build confidence, resilience, and personal growth. Each mother is paired with a case manager and trained volunteers who serve as mentors, advocates, and emotional support systems throughout her journey. Participants are referred through trusted community partners and enrolled through a needs-based application process that prioritizes those impacted by income inequality and instability.
Bi-weekly skill development sessions prepare mothers to return to work, maintain steady employment, and pursue meaningful careers. We focus on expanding access to tech training and professional skills for groups that are traditionally underrepresented such as women and BIPOC individuals.
We support adult learners by helping them strengthen literacy skills, build confidence in reading and writing so they can fully participate in society and secure stable employment. To address key barriers, the program offers daily transportation from designated pickup locations, licensed childcare, and essential support.
Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.
If our work is successful, Los Angeles County will be a place where under-resourced and BIPOC mothers have equitable access to the tools and support they need to succeed. Mothers who have faced systemic barriers, income inequality, and limited access to childcare and transportation will gain career skills, mentorship, and emotional support. As a result, families will experience greater economic stability, improved well-being, and healthier outcomes. With more confident, self-sufficient mothers leading their households, cycles of poverty and system involvement will begin to break. Communities will grow stronger, and Los Angeles will move toward a more inclusive, resilient future where all families have the opportunity to thrive.
