What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?
As a 14 year educator I have witnessed young adults strive to be literate in their reading and writing. They pour over text books and dictionaries to learn new words. They write papers and learn the art of argumentative essays, and persuasive and creating writing. However, I became aware of a larger issue. The students from 17-65 years of age were not emotionally literate. Therefore, I engage literacy from an emotional and psychological stand-point to cultivate wellness in the heart mind, body and soul of the individual thus impacting the community. Cultivating the emotional and psychological wellness of individuals raises their literacy and threshold to make sound decisions that ultimately impact LA as a community and society. The New Horizon Initiative is a bold and community-centered wellness campaign to ignite wholistic transformation by addressing adult wellness literacy. This initiative will shift mindsets, increase resource access, and foster safe and thriving communities.
