What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?

Security staff—many formerly incarcerated, homeless, or ex-military—face daily high-stress conflict, often without tools for emotional regulation or de-escalation. Traditional security models prioritize enforcement over empathy, leading to negative incidents, staff burnout, and community mistrust. Trauma histories and emotional illiteracy increase the risk of confrontations, turnover, and poor outcomes for both staff and the public

Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.

This program transforms Ramsey Security into a restorative, emotionally intelligent security force. All staff participate in emotional literacy and de-escalation training, learning to recognize, express, and manage emotions, and to resolve conflict with empathy. The curriculum includes trauma-informed practice, scenario-based role-play, peer mentorship, and ongoing skills labs. Special modules support ex-military transition and second-chance employment. The office is equipped for training, counseling, and digital learning. Career and life skills modules (resume, financial literacy) support long-term advancement. Continuous feedback, mentorship, and staff recognition foster a culture of growth and inclusion. The program aims to reduce negative incidents, improve retention, and set a new standard for inclusive, community-based security.

Describe how Los Angeles County will be different if your work is successful.

A successful program will result in safer, more inclusive communities, where security staff are trusted partners—not adversaries. Staff will model emotional regulation and restorative conflict resolution, reducing confrontations and use-of-force. Formerly marginalized individuals will find stable, meaningful employment and pathways to advancement. The model will inspire other security firms and public agencies to adopt trauma-informed, emotionally literate practices.
