The Shower of Hope Grantee Update - Mobile Showers for the Unhoused

Posted

The Shower of Hope is the largest mobile shower program in Los Angeles County, providing more than 3,000 showers a month across 25 community hubs. Our sites also offer access to other critical resources such as clothing, food, case management, mental health support in addition to many of our community hubs being used as COVID-19 vaccine sites for the unhoused.

Update

Since The Shower of Hope was awarded a grant through LA2050, we have added an additional community hub and also have been able to continue services at our Lincoln Park Community hub.

In December 2021, a new site was established in Venice in collaboration with Safe Place for Youth; a local organization focused on combating youth homelessness. Open every Thursday; our early numbers suggest the site is already a success, and the only resource for showers for many unhoused youth who come to Safe Place for Youth to access resources towards a path out of homelessness.

We have also continued operations for one of our most popular sites, Lincoln Park. In 2021, our Lincoln Park hub provided 2600 showers but was at risk of being discontinued due to financial constraints. Thanks largely to the winning grant from LA2050, we have seamlessly continued operations entering the new year.

Since the pandemic's beginning, The Shower of Hope has provided over 35,000 showers to individuals experiencing homelessness. Despite the upheavals of the last two years, we have been fortunate to expand our impact and capacity. Community partnerships are a foundational aspect to our success, as partners such as LA2050 allow us to build and foster a strong network of collaborators to improve the lives of unhoused Angelenos. Our community hubs represent a wide swath of means to help individuals with the direct services they need. On top of helping our unhoused Angelenos receive vaccines, we have also been a critical link in providing PPE and other essential services related to Covid-19 to help reduce spread amongst a population particularly vulnerable to the virus.

Next Steps

Entering 2022, The Shower of Hope expects to continue our mission of restoring dignity to the unhoused and providing the resources necessary to end homelessness. We plan on utilizing our community partnerships to identify the best areas to expand our service areas while simultaneously growing our additional programs, Hope Housing for Students and Destination Hope.

Let's make it a great year together!
