Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm on Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, people with disabilities, and homeless veterans.
Position Description: The program attorney will lead a new one-year project to develop resources to train and support attorneys providing representation in eviction cases throughout California. As the legal aid community in Los Angeles continues to prepare for a full scale Right to Counsel for low-income tenants facing eviction, we recognize the critical need to develop a robust program for a growing number of eviction attorneys. The attorney will be responsible for the following during this one-year project:
• Creating a standardized skills ladder that reflects best practices as eviction attorneys progress through their career, including specific trainings and practical experience;
• Creating a statewide Unlawful Detainer Litigation Handbook that focuses on defense strategies, particularly as they relate to negotiation and discovery;
• Creating recorded trainings specific to Unlawful Detainers on negotiations and discovery that will share successful strategies given the unique, expedited nature of UD proceedings; and
• Collaborating with ICLC staff and external partners in the local and statewide Right to Counsel movement to identify best practices, UD litigation trends, and training needs across the State.
This position has been funded for one year. Full-time and part-time applicants will be considered for this position.
Hiring Criteria: Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. Eviction defense experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong work ethic. Organized and detail-oriented. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently and as part of a team.
Compensation: Dependent on experience. Excellent benefits.
