LA Commons engages communities in the creation of art for public spaces that tells their unique stories and serves as the basis for dialogue, interaction and a better understanding of Los Angeles. Through collaboration with local partners who have built deep wells of trust, we leverage art and cultural approaches to create positive change. 

Since 2002, we have worked with over 1,000 artists, trained and mentored over 3,000 youth artists, and engaged over 35,000 community members in collaboration with scores of partners in neighborhoods across Los Angeles County. Headquartered in Leimert Park, we are committed to investing in resilient networks of youth, artists and community partners in Central and South Los Angeles. 

LA Commons, a fiscally sponsored project of Community Partners, is at a major inflection point and is seeking a skilled development and communications professional to lead and manage this growth. With a 20 year history of community arts programs and creative place-keeping in Los Angeles County, we have embarked on an ambitious 3 year plan to right-size our organization to make sustainable and significant investments in our growing networks of youth, artists and community partners in Central and South Los Angeles. In partnership with the Executive Director and senior leadership team, the Director of Communications will drive fundraising and communications for LA Commons creating and carrying out the next iteration of the strategic communications for the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Building on Strategic Communications program plans, create and carry out strategic communications plan for the organization resulting in a comprehensive and coordinated strategy for communicating with a variety of local, regional and national audiences.
  • Develop, monitor and interpret key metrics for success and reach of communications strategies including page views, email open rates, funds raised, etc…
  • Manage and mentor the Communications team. Currently consists of Communications Coordinator and Special Projects Manager.
  • Oversee media relations. Proactively seeking out news opportunities and creative earned media placements as part of short- and long-term planning for advancing the organization’s visibility and identity as a leader in cultural equity-based placekeeping and investments in South and Central Los Angeles youth, artists and communities.
  • Develop and refine key messages and ensure integration across channels (eg, websites, traditional media, social media, newsletters, webinars, speeches, photos and videos, event presentation and donor solicitations). 
  • Write and edit program materials, press outreach, marketing and other organizational communications (eg, press releases, newsletter articles, letters to the editor, reports, blogs and briefs)
  • Develop and ensure communications support for fundraising activities including email, social media and print campaigns and develop collateral to support foundation, government, corporate and individual donor engagement.

 

Requirements:

  • Highly collaborative style; 5+ years experience developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Innovative and adaptive, devoted to professional growth based on lessons learned and constructive feedback.
  • Excellent communicator across all verbal, visual, and written channels, able to relate openly and comfortably with diverse groups of people.
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Love people and figuring out how to align their interests with opportunities to create change and gain the trust of others through honesty, integrity, and authenticity.
  • Commitment to the value of healthy data and high degree of comfort using CRM and data to make relationship development and communications more predictable and effective.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy and engagement, including marketing and communication with a record of success focusing on key relationships that help scale a company's footprint in targeted marketplaces
  • Strong understanding of digital media and online engagement strategies
  • Familiarity with local and regional media ecosystems, broadcast, print and digital.
