826LA is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to work out of our Mar Vista location. This position supports our In-School and College Access programs throughout Los Angeles (East, West, & South LA) through resourceful volunteer recruitment and management and soliciting volunteer partnerships with  9-12 schools, colleges, communities, and corporations. This position offers a unique hands-on learning experience as part of a passionate and creative team. The Volunteer Coordinator will support the development and implementation of trainings, resources, and retention and systems that will help enhance and enrich the experience of volunteers at 826LA.

Position responsibilities:

  • Supports outreach, ongoing recruitment, and onboarding of volunteers from communities surrounding our Writers’ Rooms and In-Schools programs; 
  • Helps schedule and lead volunteer orientations and trainings at 826LA centers, Writers’ Rooms, and in surrounding communities;  
  • Responsible for ensuring appropriate volunteer attendance rates and participation in Writers’ Room and In-Schools projects on a daily basis; 
  • Supports coordination and implementation of volunteer appreciation and retention practices for In-Schools volunteers;  
  • Supports all volunteer team-led initiatives, including best practices, training materials, DEI goals and practices, and is responsible for the implementation of these practices for our volunteer programs; 
  • Updates and maintains volunteer database and tracking systems for In-Schools volunteers; 
  • Other duties as assigned;  
  • Reports to the Senior Manager of Volunteer Program


Ideal candidates for this role will have the following qualities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Experience with Google Suite, Zoom, and Salesforce with preference given to those with working knowledge of Salesforce;
  • Familiarity with WordPress or similar online content management systems preferred;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Spanish language skills preferred;
  • A commitment to incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our volunteer outreach, recognition, and management efforts;
  • Strong ability to multitask, be flexible, and solve problems creatively in a fast-paced environment;
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and interpersonal; 
  • A strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit, and a sense of humor;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • A results-oriented spirit and a willingness to grow and build toward the success of programs;
  • Experience with or strong interest in supporting high school students and college access work preferred
  • A passion for writing, education, and especially 826LA’s mission.
  • Must be able to submit proof of vaccination


This is a non-exempt, full-time position. Workdays are Monday through Friday, and the flexibility to work occasionally on evenings and weekends is necessary. Benefits include 15 days of vacation for the first 2 years, 20 days after that, time off for most school and federal holidays, participation in 826LA’s health care plan at 100% coverage as well as 50% coverage for family members, a full coverage dental plan, 401K plan with employer match, and life insurance plan. The salary range for this position is $40K - $45K commensurate with experience.
