The Foundation for California Community Colleges (Foundation) is on a mission to double its impact by 2028. We are seeking a Communications Specialist to join the Foundation in its mission of benefitting, supporting, and enhancing the California Community Colleges—the largest and most diverse system of higher education in the nation.

What You’ll Do 
The Communications Specialist position is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong skills in writing, editing, and content strategy to support a variety of projects on behalf of the Foundation for California Community Colleges and the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. This position will work collaboratively with a larger Communications team to develop content for a variety of platforms, predominantly digital, and help raise awareness of the Foundation’s programs and initiatives which support the largest system of higher education in the nation and its 2.1 million students. 

This position is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the Senior Content Specialist and works closely under the guidance of the Director of Communications and Vice President of Communications and Technology. 

Core Responsibilities 

  • Maintains the currency, usability, brand continuity, and stylistic standards of the Foundation’s websites (internal and external), and partners with programs to update content and/or train others on the process for doing so; builds new pages using HTML or one of the Foundation’s Content Management Systems (DNN or Wordpress). 
  • Researches, writes, edits, and produces content for communications pieces, including fact sheets, articles, annual reports, marketing brochures, advertisements, email marketing, reports, proposals, presentations, websites, and new media.
  • Manages assigned communications and digital projects or tasks from start to finish including marketing campaigns, email outreach campaigns, website development projects, and production of major publications.
  • Sources and analyzes data related to Communications efforts, including website traffic, email campaign analytics, and social media metrics. 
  • Helps maintain technology tools and forms which bring efficiencies and automation to Communications division and content team operations. 
  • Offers creative ideas and contributes to group brainstorming and critical thinking sessions.


Ideal Candidate Qualities

  • Strong writing skills, attention to detail, and ability to self-edit.
  • Understanding of web browsers and web-based applications; knowledge of content management systems for when website development support is required.
  • Proven skills in researching and obtaining trustworthy information to inform writing, including through working with subject matter experts to gain deeper knowledge of program priorities or details, and translating these details into compelling content. 
  • Practices ownership of workload and can balance high-level work with urgent requests and deadlines, with ability to respond to changing priorities effectively and efficiently.
  • Has up-to-date knowledge of communications trends, standards, and tools. Understanding of SEO, keyword research, and best practices in web content development is a plus.
  • A self-starter and quick learner with a bias for action who is highly motivated and outcome-oriented, always seeking innovative approaches to project execution
  • A strategic and creative thinker who can problem-solve, working within and across teams to swiftly respond to needs identified across the California Community Colleges
  • Practices ownership, takes accountability, and has the ability to project manage, prioritize tasks, and deliver quality products on time with limited supervision
  • A sense of urgency and ability to work on a fast-paced team and build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, the California Community College and the Foundation’s mission to provide students with stronger pathways to education, and passion for building a more just and equitable California overall.
