The Public Health Alliance of Southern California (Alliance), a coalition of 10 local health departments in Southern California representing 60% of the State’s population, is seeking a Data Analyst to support our organization’s data needs. The Data Analyst will work closely with the Data Manager, Executive Director, other Alliance team members, and consultants to implement equity-focused data collection, analysis, and visualization.  

This role supports the work of our Healthy Places Index (HPI) project, Cherished Futures (equity in maternal and child health) initiative, and expands our capacity to produce regional data analysis for our member local health departments. The Data Analyst also represents the Alliance in professional meetings as needed, identifying opportunities for data resource development and collaboration. 

The successful applicant will have a strong background in public health data, and is comfortable downloading, formatting, and analyzing a variety of data sets using R and R Studio. They are a creative problem-solver, detail-oriented, and efficient. They also excel in communicating data, and can produce effective descriptions and visualizations for non-technical audiences.

About the Healthy Places Index
The Healthy Places Index (HPI) is a powerful platform designed to identify neighborhood health opportunities where investment, programs, and policy would have the strongest impact. Comprising an index summarizing 25 measures of health-linked community conditions that are validated with life expectancy at birth, plus an interactive, web-based mapping application, the HPI platform provides the data and tools for public health practitioners, government, and funders to assist communities in reaching their greatest potential. Since 2018, HPI has been used to guide the allocation of more than one billion dollars from California state and local agencies, health care and philanthropy, directing resources to communities most in need. HPI has widespread support and has been utilized by more than 100 government agencies, local and state health departments, health care institutions, community groups and other sectors across California for a variety of different purposes.

The Alliance is launching an updated California HPI in the coming months, and we are also in the process of expanding HPI beyond California. We are seeking a candidate with the data skills and expertise to assist us in supporting the California HPI and national expansion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collects, cleans, and analyzes national, state, regional, and local data in support of Alliance initiatives, including the development of new indicators for the Healthy Places Index platform.
  • Works with Alliance data sets to produce tables, figures, and visualizations. 
  • Writes legible, annotated, and reproduceable code for all analyses.
  • Prepares technical documentation and reports.
  • Builds internal capacity for data analysis, interpretation, and visualization.
  • Develops training materials, presentation content, and provides technical assistance on the Healthy Places Index and map tool.
  • Represents the Alliance in relevant professional organizations (such as CCLHDME) and identifies opportunities for collaboration, capacity building, and/or resource development. 
  • Develops and delivers communications on program activities, including presentations, trainings, webinars, website content, and grant reports. 
  • Attends meetings and presentations relevant to the program.
  • Performs other duties as needed in support of the program as assigned by the Data Manager or Executive Director.



Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • 3 years’ related experience, including 1 years’ experience in the public health field
  • A strong, demonstrated understanding of statistical analysis and epidemiological methods.
  • Experience using R and R Studio; can fluently read and write R code for data processing tasks.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills – ability to communicate and establish effective working relationships with all levels within the organizations, and interact effectively with co-workers, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to make independent decisions following standard policies and procedures and to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment, make simultaneous progress on multiple tasks, and meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; ability to develop alternative solutions.


Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with US Census Bureau data, including American Community Survey estimates
  • Experience with data scraping:
    • Packages for R such as httr, jsonlite, rvest, and tabulizer
    • And/or Python and Selenium
  • Experience with ArcMap and/or Simple Features for basic GIS data processing and analysis, including spatial aggregation, creating buffers, and working with spatial joins
  • Experience with SQL and SQL databases



  • Bachelor’s degree required, or you can substitute with four additional years of related experience. 
  • Master’s in Public Health with a focus in Epidemiology or Biostatistics, or equivalent experience in public health and data analysis preferred.


Important Information

  • This is a full-time position (40 hours per week)
  • This is a fully remote position, and the individual chosen for this position will be expected to work from their home office
  • Candidates must be based in the United States. Southern California candidates preferred.
