The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (“NHMLAC”) was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 107 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County—including NHM at Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits and museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall—is looking forward to new building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach, and innovative audience engagement.

The NHMLAC is seeking a Design Director for our Creative Services department.  The Design Director works closely with the Creative Director to manage the design and digital campaigns to meet project/program objectives, in alignment with institutional goals and branding. Provides overall direction to the team, which bridges the gap between print and digital to maintain brand standards, establish cross-functional strategies, and execute deliverables. Fosters talent development of the studio to facilitate efficient implementation of design and connected projects/programs at the Natural History Museum. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Plans, schedules, conducts, and manages various design projects, ensuring all initiatives adhere to acceptable design practices and compliance regulations.  
  • Conducts idea mapping, design strategy, journey maps to frame digital design initiatives.
  • Provides effective management of the Design Team to achieve desired results, ensuring application of efficient work practices for core group processes.
  • Ensures that programs stay on track by resolving resource conflicts and removing obstacles, which may involve negotiations across teams. Assists with troubleshooting problems, discrepancies, and investigations of non-conformance.
  • Manages collaboration of design and digital group across other functional areas, establishes working relationships with regional/site partners, and assures metrics for design performance are met. 


This position has the following requirements:                                                                                      

  • BA or BFA in Design or other relevant applied art concentration
  • Professional 6 - 8 years (design/agency), 2+ years experience in art direction/managing/developing others or leading teams
  • Expert skill in Adobe Creative Suite, digital and web software
  • Working knowledge in one or more of the following content areas: motion graphics, UI, UX, front end development, digital marketing, branding, journey mapping, wayfinding/signage programming, social engagement platform development, environmental design planning, retail story creation, packaging, and publishing.
  • Strong record of collaboration, ensuring completion of projects/programs.


The NHMLAC is especially interested in candidates whose background and experience have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to engagement and inclusion at culturally diverse audiences in museum and in sciences.

The NHMLAC is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment working with a diverse community. Salary range for this position is $80,000 - $85,000 per annum, compensation is commensurate with experience plus excellent benefits. This is a full time regular, exempt position.
