Description

The Senior Director of School Transformation will lead the transformation efforts of the Partnership’s elementary schools in Boyle Heights/East LA, South LA, and Watts by providing direct support and coaching to principals, their leadership teams, and their school communities to improve the academic culture and conditions in order to dramatically increase student achievement. The Senior Director will ensure implementation of the Partnership’s key instructional initiatives, including teacher development, implementation of the Common Core, building a culture of high expectations for all, personalized learning, and collaborative, data driven learning communities.  Additionally, they will work closely with their manager, the Vice President of Transformation- Elementary Schools, and the Elementary Team Directors and Coordinators across the organization to strategically support and serve our secondary schools with the various instructional, talent and operations, partners and family engagement teams.

This is an ideal role for an entrepreneurial leader with a track record of transformative change in schools. As a senior member of the Partnership leadership team, the Senior Director will assist in developing short and long term goals to ensure successful implementation of the overall organizational mission, including working to impact system change, remove barriers, and scale success not only across the Partnership network but within LAUSD.

This position will require [being in schools often (approximately 80% of the time) throughout the fall when they reopen and beyond, but working remotely otherwise, as the Partnership home office remains closed. As such, this position requires living in the Los Angeles area.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Director’s key duties and responsibilities include the following areas: 

Supervision and Coaching of School Leaders 50%

In line with the vision and systems laid out by the VP of School Transformation- Elementary and the Elementary Level Team:

  • Provide direct support and coaching to principals that will improve the academic culture and conditions of schools in order to dramatically increase student achievement and teacher practice 
  • Ensure that all assigned schools create an excellent program of study, and that teacher assignments meet the needs of all students on their climb to and through college
  • Provide school leaders with side by side support for implementing the multi-measure teacher evaluation system; provide direct support and assistance to school leaders on staff performance and/or discipline issues; implement talent management strategies to ensure that all Partnership schools are staffed with highly effective teachers and administrators; manage a rigorous selection process for principals and instructional specialists at assigned schools

 

Professional Development of School Leaders 15%

In line with the vision and systems laid out by the VP of School Transformation- Elementary and the Elementary Level Team:

  • Collaboratively develop and facilitate monthly leadership conferences; lead a professional learning community of school leaders focusing on application of leadership conference learning; lead bi-monthly conferences at schools with administrators focusing on supervision of instruction, teacher development, building strong leadership teams, and other problems of practice 
  • Collaboratively plan and oversee that leadership learning is aligned to end of year application goals and is connected to the learning of key teacher leader roles

 

Level Team Leadership 15%

In line with the vision and systems laid out by the VP of School Transformation- Elementary and the Elementary Level Team:

  • Build and manage a service-oriented team focused on strategically assigning supports and services to ensure that the Partnership’s academic, operations, and family engagement subteams are able to fulfill their goals within each assigned Partnership school
  • Lead assigned school level instructional leadership teams through an annual strategic planning cycle that includes goal setting, ongoing growth and development opportunities, regular reflection process, and end of year evaluation in service of meeting rigorous college success oriented goals.
  • Develop and implement systems of ongoing monitoring, both formal and informal, to assess the performance of schools, and provide differentiated supports to ensure continuous improvement 
  • Establish consistent school-wide and classroom expectations across assigned schools to promote strong culture and principles of restorative communities

 

Manage Local District and LAUSD Coordination and Relationships 10%

In line with the vision and systems laid out by the VP of School Transformation- Elementary:

  • Develop key relationships with LAUSD staff to assist schools in accessing resources and/or to remove obstacles that hinder transformation; assist The VP of Elementary Schools where needed, in changing or influencing revisions to restrictive district policies and practices
  • Ensure schools are compliant with district policies; assess which policies are barriers to student success in college, submitting ideas for key systems change opportunities to the Partnership team

 

Home Office Leadership 10%

  • Serve as a key member of the Partnership leadership team and provide leadership in developing and implementing network goals and key initiatives; fulfill key roles with implementation of systems change initiatives at the school and network level
  • Other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • 10+ years of professional experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful experience as a full‐time certificated public school principal 
  • Minimum 3 years of successful teaching experience 
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university, required
  • A proven track record of success in driving student achievement in a public school as a principal or systems leadership role; can provide data and evidence to illustrate success      
  • Experience leading or participating in the successful school transformation at one or more school(s)   

 

Skills:

  • Ability to inspire as a leader, quickly building trust and strong working relationships with school leaders, teachers, classified staff, students, parents and other community members 
  • Passion for improving education and dramatically increasing achievement and life outcomes students of color and students growing up in families experiencing poverty; a belief that all students can reach high levels of achievement with support from adults 
  • Strong belief in empowering school sites and building systematic school capacity 
  • Knowledge of and experience implementing instructional practices that accelerate student achievement by ensuring their identity is affirmed, criticality is cultivated, in addition to ensuring students develop their intellect in combination with skill building
  • Ability to model an open and honest dialogue with all stakeholders; someone who is able to have difficult conversations in order to create the best working environment for students and other adults 
  • Reflectiveness, someone who is self‐aware and open to new ideas and opinions 
  • Experience managing and leading teams of people to outstanding results 
  • Experience leading and managing multiple, complex projects in a fast paced, entrepreneurial setting 
  • Deep understanding of standards based instruction, culturally responsive and historically sustaining curriculum, effective assessment practices and  instructional pedagogy to ensures all students experience what they deserve in reaching their hopes and dreams.
  • Experience designing and implementing comprehensive, yet innovative, professional development programs; understanding and knowledge of adult learning principles 
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written 
  • Superb management and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with school leaders, teachers and other Partnership staff 
  • Strong instructional technology skills and work flow technology
  • Spanish fluency preferred
