The Partnership is seeking a proactive, equity-minded Manager of Talent to join its School Talent Team. The Partnership’s School Talent Team is responsible for the recruitment and retention of highly effective teachers and school leaders who will best serve our 19 schools in Boyle Heights, South LA, and Watts. Reporting to the VP of Talent, the Manager of Talent is a trusted partner in leading several core workstreams. The Manager will lead the year-round work of recruiting, hiring, and retaining teachers for the Partnership’s 19 school sites (~700 total teachers; ~100 teachers hired each year) as his/her primary responsibility. In addition, the Manager plays a key role in helping shape the annual strategic direction and goals for the Talent Team, and has opportunities to engage with many teams across the organization.

Sample goals for this role:

  • 100% of teacher positions filled by the first day of school with high-performing or high-potential candidates
  • 75% of newly-hired teachers reflect the racial backgrounds of students served in our network
  • 90% of newly-hired teachers will be retained into the next school year


Key relationships for this role: 

  • Direct report to the VP of Talent
  • Peer to the Senior Associate of Talent
  • Service provider and advisor to principals and VPs of Schools
  • Liaison between principals, LAUSD HR team, and Partnership senior leaders

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
School Talent Team Responsibilities (15%)

  • Play a key role in building the team’s strategic plan and goals each year, particularly focusing on teacher recruitment, hiring, and retention goals
  • Co-plan and co-facilitate routine School Talent Team meetings
  • Serve as a guide and collaborator to the Senior Associate of Talent and School Operations; empower the Senior Associate to hold key responsibilities for teacher recruitment, selection, and retention
  • Serve as an active member of at least one Level Team (elementary, middle, or high), which are cross-functional
  • Participate in the Partnership’s systems change work, which frequently includes collaborating with colleagues on the strategy to influence LAUSD’s allocation of HR services or funds to be more equitable
  • Join (when possible and/or when interested) committees or affinity groups in the organization; we have various opportunities for leadership and learning, depending on how you are looking to engage with your colleagues

 

Teacher Talent Responsibilities (65%)

  • Ensure that all Partnership schools are recruiting, selecting, and retaining highly-effective and high-potential educators every year. Sample duties:
    • Teacher recruitment: 
      • Serve as the primary point of contact to the Partnership’s 19 principals on teacher vacancies and teacher staffing needs; the Senior Manager will be both an advisor to principals when it comes to best practices and resources, and also a do-er who jumps in to unstick challenges and expedite things for principals when possible 
      • Devise the network’s teacher recruitment strategy for sourcing candidates who best reflect our students and their needs 
      • Consistently apply an equity lens when it comes to serving our schools (and all schools in LAUSD) - for example, prioritize hardest-to-staff schools and content areas when referring candidates to schools
      • Manage day-to-day relationships with LAUSD Certificated HR team (recruitment and selection staff); facilitate regular meetings with this team; help unstick challenges the Partnership school leaders face around school staffing by leveraging HR team’s support
      • Champion the use of data and analytics to help the organization continually learn throughout the talent cycle 
      • Develop events/opportunities to engage potential candidates and leverage Partnership staff and teachers to engage candidates (through hiring fairs, webinars, interviews, cultivation calls, etc.)
      • Own relationships with teacher pipeline partners, including LAUSD’s recruitment team, various universities, Teach For America, LA Urban Teacher Residency, Educators for Excellence, TeachPlus, EnCorps, Black Teacher Project, Black Educator Advocates Network, and others
      • Play a key role in designing communications from the School Talent Team for recruitment of teachers and school leaders, including email blasts, social media posts, and so on
    • Teacher selection: 
      • Manage Talent Team’s internal applicant screening process, with a goal of maximizing the chance that we are referring high-performing and high-potential, anti-racist educators to our schools 
      • Internalize LAUSD’s guidelines for teacher hiring; oversee the system for referring candidates to schools 
      • Own the creation, revision, and sharing of all resources for schools in the Teacher Hiring Toolkit
      • Serve as primary point of contact to principals and APs making offers to teacher candidates
      • Support the Director of Teacher Residency to run interview days for teacher residents
    • Teacher retention: 
      • Lead school administrators and relevant home office team members to maximize retention of high-performing and high-potential teachers 
      • Own the creation/revision and sharing of all resources for schools associated with teacher retention
      • Establish a routine for collecting information from teachers who leave the network (e.g. exit surveys, exit interviews) as well as from teachers who stay or we especially want to retain (e.g. stay interviews), and use learnings to determine retention strategies

 

School Leader Talent Responsibilities (20%)

  • Principal and Assistant Principal selection: Support the VP of Talent, VPs of Schools, and principals to run school leader selection processes, including designing selection process steps, screening candidates, providing ongoing guidance and resources, co-facilitating interviews and debrief conversations, and being the primary point of contact to school leader candidates
  • See that proper paperwork is completed to finalize administrator assignments through LAUSD HR
  • Support schools to find and assign interim administrators when needed

  • Expertise and comfort with candidate sourcing/cultivation strategies, various interview techniques, and methods for reducing bias in candidate screening and hiring
  • Proven ability to consistently apply a lens of diversity, equity and inclusion to talent systems and processes
  • Proven ability to execute effectively against strategy and meet or exceed goals consistently                            
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences using multiple media
  • Ability and willingness to receive and give feedback, including delivering feedback upwards and laterally    
  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work openly and collaboratively with many different people, including those more senior than you, more junior than you, and those who may come from different racial, gender, or socioeconomic backgrounds than you
  • Sound judgment when it comes to HR issues including fierce commitment to confidentiality and integrity
  • Familiar with HR software including applicant tracking system (ATS) and candidate relationship management (CRM) tools
  • Comfort with basic statistics and ways that various kinds of data can support decision making
  • Knowledge of Excel/Google sheets, including use of formulas and functions for expedited use of data    
  • Ease at managing competing demands and determining top priorities independently
  • Strong work ethic and the highest level of integrity and reliability
  • A positive outlook, flexibility, and a sense of possibility in stressful situations
  • Reflective and a life-long learner

 

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree in education, business/human resources, public administration or related field preferred
  • 5 years of professional work experience; 3+ years in recruitment, talent, or HR highly preferred
  • K-12 classroom teaching experience ideal, though not required
  • Experience building and managing complex projects and systems required; must have implemented or started a new process, or overseen a project to completion
  • Experience influencing others to get things done who don’t formally report to you, including those more senior than you
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

The Partnership has recently completed a thorough study of market-competitive salaries, and has applied the learning from that study to salary offers for all home office positions. Our goal is to ensure that pay is fair for all staff members, both considering the market and considering pay equity among staff in similar roles in the organization. The Partnership offers a robust benefits package including employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance and a 403(b) retirement program. This is a full time, year-round position.
