The Communications Coordinator will support the communications team at Harness in ideating and executing external communications tactics in support of Harness’ organizational goals. The Communications Coordinator will lead the charge in growing Harness’ online presence (including Protect the Sacred and other sub brands that may arise) through engaging content that drives brand awareness, traffic, and engagement on our social channels and other online platforms. You will use the tools of digital storytelling and community management to advance Harness’s mission to educate, inspire and activate our community to use the power of storytelling to imagine and co-create a more equitable world and move people to action for social change. Your primary focus will be on content creation and daily execution of our social media channels, and you’ll also play an integral role with supporting a wide breadth of content marketing and digital communication initiatives. Harness was founded by America Ferrera, Wilmer Valderrama, and Ryan Piers Williams as a gathering of friends in response to the 2016 presidential election and the following period of social upheaval. Since its founding, Harness has grown into a national, intersectional community of well-known artists, activists, and entertainment industry leaders that amplify the experiences of historically marginalized communities to reach millions of people. We work with a community of incredible storytellers, artists, and cultural influencers to harness their talent, passion, and platform to imagine and create a world where everyone has safety, opportunity, and dignity. 

Our programs and campaigns have catalyzed wide-scale support, prominent media coverage, inclusion in pop culture storylines, and transformative partnerships for frontline leaders from historically-marginalized groups. In addition to our long standing artist engagement, industry impact, and community building programs, Harness houses several timely culture change and civic engagement initiatives, including Protect The Sacred, Culture Surge, and Poderistas. Protect the Sacred educates and empowers the next generation of leaders and allies to use transformative storytelling and community building to strengthen Indigenous sovereignty and protect Indigenous elders, languages, and medicine ways. Protect the Sacred is a program of Harness.

Time commitment: Full time (40 hours/week)
Location: Remote
Anticipated Start Date: August 2021
Salary: $65,000 plus generous compensation package including fully-paid medical, vision, and dental as well as 401k benefits and other perks.

Explanation of Roles
Harness uses the MOCHA project management system to clarify roles.

M: Manager: Assigns responsibility and holds the owner accountable. Makes suggestions, asks hard questions, reviews progress, serves as a resource, and intervenes if work is off-track.

O: Owner: Has overall responsibility for the success or failure of the project. Ensures that all the work gets done (directly or with helpers) and that others are involved appropriately. 

C: Consulted: Should be asked for input or needs to be bought into the project.

H: Helper: Assists with or does some of the work.

A: Approver: Signs off on decisions before they’re final. 


  • Develop and manage social media and community manager strategy for Harness and Protect the Sacred:  Owner 
  • Execute the written "voice" of the Harness/Protect the Sacred brands on social media by implementing the brand strategy across all social channels
  • Lead the editorial vision for social media platforms by utilizing existing Harness/Protect the Sacred content, and curating and producing original content
  • Initiate and manage brand expansion opportunities through new storytelling projects, partnerships and enhanced community management
  • Identify and manage SEO initiatives and opportunities
  • Manage day-to-day operations of social media (IG, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube). Owner  
  • Create content calendar 
  • Respond to DMs and messages on social media media platforms. Flag high priority messages for Harness Communications team/Protect the Sacred team
  • Build our following with target audiences 
  • Provide weekly and monthly social media analytics and insight recommendations to reach our qualitative and quantitative goals utilizing Sprout software
  • Content Creation and Campaign Management: Owner
  • Source information and design email newsletters for Harness Community
  • Curate/design evergreen content to amplify Harness Community priorities, cultural moments, and other content as related to our social media pillars
  • Create digital graphic design assets for evergreen digital media campaigns and work with graphic designer(s) to create content for larger programmatic activations/campaigns
  • Update Harness website on regular basis to keep content current: Helper
  • Participate in weekly staff meeting and regular Communications meetings


Must Haves

  • Minimum 3 years of editorial and/or digital marketing campaign experience
  • Experience with content testing and managing content delivery
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite software and Canva-type applications
  • Video editing and graphic design experience
  • Excellent copy editing skills
  • Experience managing content creators 
  • Excellent organizational, planning and scheduling skills
  • Experience with crafting language around social justice campaigns and issue advocacy, either professionally or personally
  • Demonstrates deep understanding, passion and alignment with the Harness and Protect the Sacred missions


Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the nonprofit sector, social movements and/or politics
  • Familiarity, knowledge, and experience working with Indigenous communities
  • Comfortable working with a remote team and aware of strategies to excel in this environment
