Compensation - $23 per hour

Summary

The Public Health Alliance of Southern California (Public Health Alliance), a coalition of 10 local health departments representing 60% of the State of California’s population, is looking for a Health Equity & Justice Intern to support the goals and capacity building work of the Public Health Alliance’s Health Equity & Justice team. This candidate will specifically support the coordination and facilitation of a Regional Equity Learning Collaborative, as well as support the ongoing identification of resources and other capacity building supports for our Alliance member departments. 

Candidates for this position must have experience with research, writing and coordination. We are seeking a California-based candidate with some experience working in or with government, preferably with LHDs directly. Candidates for this position must have a passion for advancing health and racial equity. This is a part-time (16-18 hours per week), one-year internship, with the opportunity to extend for an additional year. The anticipated start date is mid-July 2021. This position will be working remotely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the ongoing identification and sharing of promising practices and resources to support Alliance members in advancing health and race equity
  • Assist in the creation of workshop materials, including conducting spot research of best health and racial equity practices from across the nation, and drafting brief write-ups on key areas of focus
  • Contribute to the substantive development of handouts, PowerPoint presentations, webinars, and other collateral materials as identified
  • Facilitate portions of Collaborative workshops, including small breakouts and large group presentations
  • Attend all regularly scheduled Collaborative workshops, coordinate and manage logistics and administration of the Collaborative, and support outreach to guest presenters and/or facilitators
  • Support and communicate regularly with Collaborative partners, as needed.
  • Maintain detailed and organized notes and files.
  • Support notetaking and sharing with Collaborative members
  • Support the development and facilitation of health and racial equity trainings
  • Participate in professional development opportunities with the Public Health Alliance team

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1-2 years academic or work experience in public health, public policy, urban planning or a related field.
  • Knowledge of the social determinants of health and the underlying root causes of health inequities.
  • Some experience in conducting a landscape analysis, and comfort with synthesizing and compiling large amounts of information into a cohesive and succinct format. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated in a remote work environment, creative, organized, and deeply committed to health and racial equity.
  • A team player who can work well with a small but dedicated, cohesive and high performing staff, and deep project management skills.
  • Determination to achieve outcomes, complete tasks, and deliver on professional commitments.
  • Sensitivity to varied interests of many stakeholders, partners, advocates, elected officials, and colleagues.
  • Candidate must be based in California, with a preference for candidates based in Southern California.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity working with or within government, with a preference for candidates who have experience working with LHDs specifically.
  • Some experience developing and/or facilitating trainings, workshops or learning sessions.

 

Education

Current student or recent graduate (fall 2020 or spring 2021) of a Master’s level program or higher in Public Health, Public Policy, Urban Planning or a related field, or 3-4 years of equivalent professional experience.

Organizational Relationships

This position reports to the Alliance’s Health Equity & Justice Manager, and works collaboratively with Alliance members, staff, consultants, and other partners to advance equity.
