Description

Fundamental, a boutique philanthropic and political consulting firm, seeks a Communications Manager to work with our team to design and implement the communications strategy of a soon-to-be launched private family foundation dedicated to creating a more equitable, just and connected America. The position is for an initial six month consultancy (roughly 20 hours/week), with the possibility of an extension and/or transition into full-time staff. This role is currently remote with the likely opportunity to transition in the fall to a hybrid work environment based in the Los Angeles area.

The Communications Manager will serve as an ambassador for our firm and our client – a foundation that sees philanthropy as a creative act and narrative and storytelling as a key component to its strategy. The Communications Manager will collaborate with other members of the Fundamental team on all aspects of internal and external communications and work with the foundation’s key funding partners as a way to amplify their work in social change. A successful Communications Manager has storytelling and strategic communications expertise, is a creative thinker, and has strong leadership and project management abilities. Duties include, but are not limited to:

External Communications:

  • Develop and implement an effective communications strategy that uplifts and reflects our values, work, and mission
  • Build and steward relationships with local and national press in order to develop and pitch stories for the foundation and its grantee partners
  • Draft and distribute press or public-facing materials as needed. This may include op-eds, talking points, press releases, event materials and other items
  • Develop a media kit and style guide for the firm and foundation
  • Develop and implement an engagement strategy and content for the foundation’s digital channels, including a website (copy, multimedia pieces, art + photography), branding, and e-newsletters
  • Work collaboratively with grantee partners to support and amplify their work and campaigns. This may include providing communications guidance, pitching stories about their work, and/or connecting them with creative partners
  • Serve as a liaison between the foundation and grantee partners helping to process requests around listings, honors, and event ads
  • Respond to media inquiries and interview requests and prepare staff for interviews
  • Measure and analyze the impact of the foundation’s communications and continuously adjust approaches to improve effectiveness

 

Internal Communications:

  • Collaborate with existing communications thought partners to ensure a coordinated strategy
  • Plan and facilitate communication, spokesperson and campaign trainings for firm and foundation teams
  • Support senior leadership and programmatic staff on communications initiatives and materials as needed 
  • Monitor internet, print news, and sector publications for relevant coverage to share with firm in real time
  • Other duties as assigned

 


Desired Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 7-10 years’ communications experience required in the foundation, non-profit, and/or policy sectors; prior history working in the entertainment industry, with elected officials and/or political campaigns a plus
  • A familiarity with the current media landscape, knowledge of market news outlets, and reporters and a proven track record of pitching and placing stories a must
  • Proven ability to deliver results and meet deadlines as part of a fast-paced office environment a must
  • Creative thinker with strong writing, research and storytelling skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 applications (Outlook, Word, and Excel); ability to navigate both PC and Apple platforms preferred; knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Mailchimp and Keynote software a plus
  • Experience and expertise utilizing and managing various social media channels, web platforms and tech tools and a comfort learning and using new technology
  • Exceptional attention to detail and demonstrated ability to prioritize large numbers of tasks efficiently and effectively
