Position: Development & Communications Associate (DCA)
20-30 hours per week, flexible hours Monday-Friday
$20-23 per hour depending on experience, plus health and dental benefits

L.A. GOAL is a non-profit organization that partners with adults with developmental disabilities (our ‘Members’) and their support networks to assist them in living more fulfilling lives. Throughout our 52 year history, we have continuously sought to understand our Members’ needs, how those needs evolve over time, and how our Members are affected by shifting societal dynamics and inequalities. Our goal is to create more opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities to thrive throughout all aspects of life, to have meaningful relationships, and to feel a sense of belonging within society. We help the public go beyond ability or disability to see and honor the core being of our Members and ourselves. 

About the position: 
We are looking for a Development & Communications Associate to help us sustain, build and maintain our fundraising and communications efforts. This role includes a dynamic range of activities including coordination, administration, research, and content generation. The person who is the right fit for this position will enjoy being both highly organized and creative. Creativity will be a particular asset in growing our social media communications, an area where we are hoping to expand our presence and reach.

The Development & Communications Associate (DCA) works under the supervision of the Executive Director, with additional guidance from the Director of Development. The position is 20-30 hours per week, with flexibility on specific days and hours, to be agreed upon with the Executive Director. This position is based at our office in Culver City, CA.  

The Development and Communications Associate (DCA) supports the Development Director and other staff in all these responsibilities. Specific tasks include:

Supporting Grant and Donor Activities 
 

  • Manage organizational database (eTapestry), including entering new donors, entry of all contributions following database rules and procedures, updating existing contacts, and running reports. Ensure all contacts details comply with mailing standards
  • Coordinate the printing and mailing of all donor ‘thank you’ letters and tribute cards
  • Assist in the research of grant/funding opportunities, as assigned
  • Maintain the development calendar to ensure timely submission of grant letters of inquiry, grant proposals, grant reports, and other key development dates
  • Assist in writing grant proposals and reports, as assigned 
  • Process PayPal and credit card donations and payments and maintain proper administration
  • Package and mail grants and reports
  • Assist in mailings and bulk mailings (run mailings lists, compile and print labels, and packaging) for the agency
  • Assist in developing and implementing both short and long-term fundraising goals, action plans, and continued innovations for the Development Department
  • Managing and organizing all aspects of fundraising events
  • File timely reports and permits with the city, county, and state as needed for raffles, events, and donation requirements 
  • Coordinate closely with Development Director to monitor progress of grant proposals
  • Assist in coordinating the Board Fundraising Committee 
  • Assist in developing organizational annual reports and other funder materials
  • Maintain inventory of required office supplies and stationery, such as letterhead paper, stamps and envelopes
  • Maintain organizational profiles on GuideStar and other nonprofit networks
  • Other development-related administrative tasks in Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets, Publisher and Photoshop, as needed

 

Leading our online communications

  • Help develop and lead in the implementation of a social media strategy and calendar that promotes L.A. GOAL’s mission and values, including promotion of art events and art products for sale through our social enterprise, Inside Out Productions 
  • Run social media diagnostic reports and evolve strategies accordingly (currently including Instagram and Facebook) based on engagement and needs of the organization
  • Maintain the organizational website, run diagnostic reports and adapt accordingly
  • Assist in developing online newsletters 
  • Research and manage media list
  • Compile and maintain media kits 
  • Attend meetings/events/seminars, as requested

 

Qualifications
We are looking for someone who:

  • Is able to work independently and creatively, as well as take direction and work as part of a diverse team
  • Is articulate, detail-oriented, and has strong follow up, organizational and administrative management skills
  • Demonstrates initiative, resourcefulness, and an ability to manage multiple assignments under deadlines
  • Has strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Possesses in-depth understanding and experience with various social media platforms (including Instagram and Facebook), including creativity in content generation and skill engaging with followers/potential followers
  • Is proficient in Microsoft and Google software, including Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets, PowerPoint. Proficiency in Publisher, InDesign, and database management are a plus. 
  • Is proficient in website editing or willingness to learn 
  • Has patience and willingness for assessing and solving tech issues that arise 
  • Is an enthusiast for nonprofit work
  • Has at least 1 year of relevant experience in a nonprofit or analogous setting 
  • Possesses the patience and openness to work with and understand the individual needs, strengths, and talents of the L.A. GOAL Members (adults with developmental disabilities) and other staff members/colleagues at L.A. GOAL
