Supervisor: MAK Center Director
Status: Full-time, 40 hrs/wk, Salaried, Non-Exempt
This position supervises the following staff: Program Assistants, seasonal interns, independent contractors and vendors
The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is seeking a forward-thinking Exhibitions and Programs Manager to help develop and execute the MAK Center’s annual calendar of exhibitions, programs, special projects, and residency. This role works closely with the Director, Business Manager, Programs and Development Coordinator, and part-time Programs Assistants, alongside guest curators, artists, architects, and external collaborators, to envision and produce critical and pedagogical exhibitions and programs, as well as supporting the international Artist and Architects in Residence.
The ideal candidate is thoughtful, energetic, and dedicated to building a network of diverse, multi-disciplinary collaborators to help shape the institution on both the back-end and front-end, centering on experimentation, critical inquiry, and care. They should be highly organized, able to manage multiple projects and programs at once, and skilled in communications and writing.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone whose values and character resonates with our institutional work and history, respects and acknowledges many types of actors and agents involved in exhibition-making and programming, and approaches projects with optimism and deep engagement. - Exhibitions and programs management: Develop proposals and budgets for programs with Director; oversee timelines, budgets, and overall development of exhibitions and programs, MAK Center publications and catalogues, and communications including press; assume responsibilities for planning and managing exhibitions including communication with artists and guest curators; preparation of contracts; preparing condition reports; production of exhibition related didactics; supervision of transport, travels, installation and de-installation of exhibitions
- Residency program management: Supervise all aspects of the residency program, from administration to residency program development; curate the Final Projects exhibitions in consultation with Director, oversee the maintenance of the Mackey Apartment building and Garage Top, maintain the archive of exhibition documentation and records of activities and programs of the MAK Center and its residents.
- Staff and facilities management: oversee office administration, including timeline management, communications, facilities management, and volunteer/intern recruitment; appointing and delegating responsibilities to interns, part-time and volunteer staff relative to program development and overseeing their work.
- Grants assistance: research possible grant opportunities, work with Director and grant writer to coordinate all aspects of submission of grant applications, assist with reporting.
- Development assistance: With Director and MAK Center team, conceptualize, plan and coordinate benefit events including MAK Games and MAK Tours, donor cultivation events; support in building up a network of Advisors, Patrons, Sponsors, Host Committees, and Press Outreach around benefit events; develop special programs and sponsorships
- Office & Visitor Services: perform office administrative duties such as greeting visitors, answering the phone, checking the general voicemail for messages, updating the website, general communications, and making appointments; manage and staff visitor services at MAK Center including opening up the Schindler House (835 N. Kings Road, West Hollywood) to the public; perform ticketing and admissions services; maintain visitor services/ticketing schedule, including scheduling weekend staffing, training new staffing for visitor services; checking [email protected] email and responding to visitor inquiries; responding to and organizing group tours and private visits; scheduling docent-guided tours and group tours; support in bookstore sales and management; tracking bookstore purchases and shipping books from the bookstore.
- 3+ years experience working with museums, galleries or independent art spaces in curation, exhibitions coordination and/or supervision
- Strong organisational skills, ability to multitask and proven track record in exhibitions and programs coordination or arts organizing
- Attention to detail and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people, clear and precise writing ability
- Experience with grant writing and reporting for project or organizational funding
- Interest and background in multidisciplinary practices, drawing from contemporary art, design and architecture
- Familiarity with softwares and platforms including Google Drive, Slack, Mailchimp, WordPress/Squarespace, Filemaker Pro a plus
Hours are generally Monday-Friday, between 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, but will fluctuate to accommodate the calendar of exhibitions and public programs.
