Description

Ocean & Mountain is a Los Angeles-based consulting team dedicated to advancing social justice and progressive causes through strategic communications. Our clients are leading social change across the most transformational policy fronts in Los Angeles right now, including addressing the housing and homelessness crisis, building racial and social equity, and transforming our justice system.

We're seeking a Media Relations Manager to support message development and media relations campaigns for clients working in affordable housing advocacy, ending the homelessness crisis and reimagining our justice system.

This is a very specific role for one key skill: you *must* have a track record of successful media pitching. Only candidates with press clips they've pitched will be considered. We're looking for someone who reads the news voraciously and knows the LA media market and also reads The New York Times, The New Yorker and The Atlantic.

This is a part-time contract position. The associate will work remotely; however, some on-site time with the client may be required. We prioritize a healthy life-work balance, but occasional weekend or evening work may be required.

Desired skills:

  • At least 5 years of media relations experience, with demonstrated success writing and sending press releases and media advisories, building targeted media lists, calling and pitching media, and producing press conferences and pitches that generate positive, on-message media coverage.
  • Excellent writer and communicator, with ability to recognize and craft compelling stories that inspire audiences to take action and distill complex concepts into simple and clear messages
  • Relationships and expert knowledge about reporters covering the Los Angeles media market, and national influential media
  • Familiarity and commitment to progressive policy and social justice causes
  • A creative problem-solver motivated by fast-moving projects
  • Ability to develop and manage relationships with multiple contacts within client organizations

Plus:

  • Spanish fluency

Compensation:

  • We anticipate 15-20 hours per week at a rate of $50 per hour or more based on experience.
