The EnCorps STEM Teachers Program recruits, prepares and supports career-changing and retiring STEM professionals, as an innovative, long-term solution to the shortage of high quality, impactful educators for under-resourced students in high need communities.

Position Summary:
Reporting to and in partnership with the  National Program Director, the STEMx Tutor Coordinator (referred to as Tutor Coordinator moving forward in this document) will provide essential support to EnCorps’ mission to support and mentor the best and brightest science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professionals, as an innovative, long-term solution to the shortage of high quality, impactful educators for underrepresented students in high needs communities.

Enduring STEM achievement, access, and literacy gaps disproportionately limit low income, under-resourced, and minority student opportunities. STEM professionals, when thoroughly prepared, are uniquely positioned to meaningfully utilize their talent and real-world expertise as EnCorps STEM Teachers to deliver an authentic, rigorous, and relevant STEM education to students who need it most.

The Tutor Coordinator is a full-time (40 hours/week) position ideally located in Los Angeles. The Tutor Coordinator will serve as the primary point of contact for STEMx tutors as they volunteer tutor students with the EnCorps program. The Tutor Coordinator will be responsible for the on boarding and managing of STEMx tutors’ experience, as well as providing coaching and mentoring as they tutor students at a partner school. 

The Tutor Coordinator will be supported by the National Program Director at every step, who will be in frequent contact. The Tutor Coordinator will benefit from having tools and protocols developed in-house at their disposal that shape and guide all aspects of a STEMx tutor’s experience, and will have the opportunity to provide feedback in order to improve these tools and protocols.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates, organizes and oversees the daily operations of the tutoring program;
  • Meet weekly with the National Program Director;
  • Lead the training and onboarding procedures for tutors, monitor the work of tutors by reviewing tutor feedback weekly, and provide feedback on tutoring/teaching methods and techniques;
  • Work in collaboration with the school site coordinator of each partner school to successfully match students to EnCorps STEMx tutors;
  • Serves as liaison between tutors and school site coordinators in the training of tutors on the school’s math curriculum and online learning platform;
  • Works with the school site coordinator in conducting periodic reviews of the tutoring program and professional development provided;
  • With the help of the school site coordinator, investigates any concerns expressed by either tutors or students and resolves or refers the matter to EnCorps’ National Program Director if warranted;
  • Meets with the school site coordinator at least once monthly to solicit input for continual improvement of the tutoring program and services provided;
  • Review and respond to all requests from EnCorps tutors for assistance on a daily basis;
  • Communicate closely with tutors to assess their needs;
  • Update and maintain tutoring database on a regular basis;
  • Hold a minimum of two office hours a month;
  • Implement monthly trainings and workshops for tutoring best practices;
  • Participates in development and implementation of operational, administrative, program and policies and procedures;
  • Develop assessment methods, gather evidence, analyze and use reports to improve the effectiveness of the tutoring program;
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the National Program Director.



  • Collaborate within and across departments to create and support a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, teamwork and empowerment;
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external constituents;
  • Ensure timely communication with tutors, staff, and partners;
  • Maintain current knowledge of all EnCorps STEMx tutor programming;
  • Represent a positive and professional image of EnCorps; 
  • Understand and comply with policies and practices outlined in EnCorps Staff Handbook.


We are seeking candidates who believe deeply in our organization’s mission, who thrive in a dynamic environment, and who have a record of successfully coaching teachers, interns, or student teachers. Note that prior public middle or high school teaching experience is necessary for this role. Experience as an instructional coach, school administrator, field supervisor, or teacher leader is preferred. Successful candidates will also demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of and relationships with the local education community; 
  • Experience in program development and implementation (e.g., workshops, trainings, events, etc.);
  • Experience in working with underrepresented and underserved students
  • Excellent communication and writing skills;
  • Impeccable organization and attention to detail;
  • Outstanding interpersonal, relationship building, and teamwork skills;
  • The ability to learn quickly, take initiative, work in a fast paced environment and multi-task effectively;
  • Ability consistently display a high level of professionalism in all interactions;
  • Ability to work autonomously once trained; 
  • Willingness to engage in regional travel (for quarterly staff meetings);
  • Excellent skills working with computers, including a strong working knowledge of -Salesforce, the Microsoft Office suite, and Google Suite;
  • A willingness to work non-standard hours and/or occasional evenings;
  • An unwavering commitment to educational equity;
  • A burning desire to address the teacher shortage crisis;
  • A passion for STEM.

Because EnCorps does not have a physical office, the Tutor Coordinator will need to be comfortable working remotely, which includes facility with communication technology, Google Suite (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Meet), Salesforce, and a strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite. This position requires regular travel within the Los Angeles greater area  in order to participate in full team meetings. Occasional non-traditional working hours are also required.
